Not 200 questions, questions about a 200 engine!

6 cylinder gurus, help me.

I am going to have hardened valve seats installed in my '66 head. I thought new valve springs, retainers and locks would be a good idea. Anyone make good aftermarket kits?

I have also read about using a 1975 head for the hardened valve seats and the slightly larger intake passages and I am also considering going that way. The head needs to be shaved to recover some lost compression. I have read that .030 is a good number but how do I accomodate that cut in the pushrods? Does someone make .030 shorter pushrods?

How about exhuast manifolds? Any one year to get for increased flow? I'm not building a hotrod 6 cylinder. Just thought if there is a better exhaust manifold, I'd get one. I have to replace mine anyway due to cracks in the original.

How about a better ignition? I have heard about the Duraspark and DurasparkII. Easy to retrofit? I don't mind making a few modifications for better efficiency, smoother running. Autolite 1100 carb is going to Pony Carbs for a resto.

My car only has 41k original miles so I don't want to go hog wild with it (well, actually I do. I have a 429.....)

Don't waste time with a restrictive manifold.
Get a dual collector header and install dual exhaust with long glass packs.
Looks, sounds, and performs great.

I really don't want to change things under the hood that much. Since the exhaust manifold has to be changed anyway, I thought there might be a better one than the 1966 unit. If not, I'll just get a replacement.

67-68 has a larger outlet as I recall.

and I agree about the header and dual exhaust --- since youre not going "all out" with the engine, there will be no difference noticed between the single outlet header and dual outlet header ---- may AS WELL go dual just because it looks better

The 67-68 manifold is bigger than the 65-66 but them you will have to deal with your exhaust hookup.

The duraspark shouldn't really be a question, its such a cheap upgrade and works great:

That should help you out with wiring.

The 200 in itself is a great engine though, realy depends on what you want to do with one. You can bolt on an 0Z 2 barrel head, or goto the trouble of mating a Crossflow head to one. But you just gotta think, with all the space under the hood.. I could see a nicely done turbo set up.
All depends on what you want.

I just want to upgrade some things. Nothing wild, just some basics.

The Mustang has only 41k miles on it, is still all original, even has the original spare with the wiskers still on it. So, I don't want to change things very much visually. Multiple carbs, cross-flow heads, headers are out.

I want to have hardened valve seats. So I either have them installed in my head (my engine's head ) or replace the '66 head with one that already has them. If the later model head will give me the hardened seats along with a larger intake log and bigger valves, then I'll do that. Its an upgrade that won't really change the look of the engine. If the later exhaust manifold is slightly larger, works better and still looks stock, I'll do that.

I know the Duraspark distributor will look quite different, but I'm willing to live with that for the electronic spark control and higher energy.

The Mustang is used for fun driving out in the counrtyside and occasional around town driving. Its a small city in the middle of some great cruising roads. I'm looking for slightly better performance and efficiency. I'm going to swap in a T5 since the weakling 2.77 has broken. Rear axle is 3.20 open. I'm using a T5 from a 1990 Mustang with the 4 cylinder engine. I'm using the 4 cylinder version for the lower first gear and lower overdrive.
