Hi
I am thinking about using POR-15 to paint the engine bay area of my 65 Mustang.

Any thoughts? is there a down side to this miracle paint?

What is the correct color to use?

Thanks

Are you using it instead of primer? Are you using it to cover any rust? Why would you be using it? As always you can do whatever you want with the car because it's yours but if you're doing that to keep you from doing it the "correct" way then I would say you're doing your car and yourself a dis-service. Your engine bay should be satin black so anything you paint it with you'll want to (I assume) to paint it the correct color whren you're finished with the POR 15
Just my 2 cents

Jeffstar,

If you prepare the metal properly then any paint will work. I am personally going to use POR-15 because it seems to be a very durable paint and should not chip and scratch as easily.

I thought that the proper color on all Mustang engine bays is semi-gloss black, not Satin black.

Ronnie there seems to always be some dispute about the engine bay but I've got it from a very reliable source that it is not gloss. I'll do some more research.

The jury's in, it's satin black. Further research shows that Eastwood makes a product that comes very close to the original paint.

I don't think I would go with POR-15. It would be a nightmare if you ever wanted to re-detail the compartment. I put this on par with the guy who used Rhino-lining in his engine compartment.

My friend used glossy black POR in his Camaro's engine compartment. He thinks it looks great, I sure don't.

Ken,
I'm not able to tell from your picture; Did the "Diamond Clear" make the finish glossy or was the satin finish maintained?

The Diamond Clear did absolutely nothing to the Under Hood Black's satin finish. If you'd like I can email you a better (clearer) picture.....

Doesn?t POR-15 have a Semi-Gloss or a Satin? I thought they had one of those, besides if you want to paint over it at a later date you can just use their tie coat.

Yes, I have both gloss and semi-gloss POR on hand.

Sorry, but the message you just tried to load doesn't exist! You may have followed an obsolete hard-coded link, or it may be that you just tried to enter the address manually, and mis-typed it.

Sounds like the Autobody store got a letter from Por's atty. They did a test comparing Por with Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator and gave Eastwood a better rating.

The 66 cv that I now have had a surface rusted engine bay. Wire wheeled it with a 4" angle grinder and a woven wire wheel-a nasty tool! Wore respirator and ear plugs plus eye protection (welding helmet with dark lens up). After completion, sprayed it with Ospho in a 409 spray bottle. The wire wheel removed most of the original finish and the Ospho left a paintable surface. Sanded it with 80 then 180 grit. Brush primed it with Sears zinc rich primer 5.00 a qt. It has Portland cement in it for good grip and it does work. It flows well. Will wet sand it with 320, prime it again with Krylon gray primer and 1613. Do not anticipate any furthur rust, 'cause there's none hiding. The 1613 will give it an orig appearance. THere are good products out there that will give a good surface at a reasonable price. Have experimented with a lot of stuff and have had good luck with the Sears product. They also market a semi gloss paint to use over it. Did the bottom on a 68 and it worked well. A word about Rustoleum. Had metal grating, gate, etc. on my house painted with Rustoleum dark green paint three years ago. We have high humidity, hot sunlight. It has held up very well.

Por 15 is designed for application over hard rust with any flaking wire wheeled off. It will provide good protection. It is limited in use re UV sensitivity and lack of ease and satisfaction in painting over. There are other products to use in an engine bay unless you have a bay that is solid rust. Feel that it is grossly overpriced.
