Does anyone know the story on the callout numbers on the hoods of '70 Mach 1s? {the 351 or 428} Some of them are all black and some of them have white surrounding the black letters. Are the black with white borders numbers early production?

Here's the white border:

...and of course the ubiquitous black letters:

Rick Schmidt contacted Scott Halseth at NPD in Michigan, and he has a pretty reasonable theory:

"Im no expert here but I have never known an original Mach 1 to have the outline numbers, only solid black or white. I believe the outline numbers were
Fords attempt to service two part numbers with one. Universal fit: dark colored cars or light colored cars."

Thanks Rick and Scott!

I don`t believe that the white outlined hood numbers were "non original" at all. In the 70`s I owned 2 70 Mustangs, a 70 Sportsroof with a 351C 4v & shaker(Grabber Orange), and aGrabber Green Mach 1 (non Shaker), also a "M" code. Both cars had the white outline "351" hood decals, as does my buddys 70 "M" code Sportsroof with Shaker that he bought brand new, & still owns. My Pastel Blue 70 Mach 1, 428 CJ with Shaker, had solid black 428 hood stickers on it, however. It may have been related to color choice, I don`t know, but back when these cars were still fairly new, I`d say the white outlined numbers were much more common.
