I've been stuck on this decision for months. Put yourself in my position: Your 18 and about to go to college. You have a '95 explorer nearing 100,000 miles and a '67 mustang. The mustang is cool and all, but its not a good daily driver for obvious reasons (gas mileage, reliability, etc.), and if I wanna go fast, it would be more effecient to just buy a used LS1 or Cobra. And the explorer could be nearing several problems because of the high mileage. Some possible options are:
sell both and get either a used c5 vette or used '03 cobra
Fix any potential problems with the explorer, and try to make the mustang more reliable
Sell the explorer and put AOD and fuel injection and all that modern stuff in the mustang
Sell both and get a newer truck and a rusted out stang and do it all over again
sell them both, buy a used pinto, and save the $$$..haha...not!
What would you do?
Thanks for your opinions

One thing to consider: in 2001 I got a nada print out of the value of my car, it was $10,000. In late 2003, I got the same thing and it was $12,500. Basically rising about $1000 a year. Thats nice to know, but what good is that at all if I'm not selling it? On the other hand, if I keep it for 10 more years, then it should be worth $22,000, but by then I'll be a old fart anyway and it wont matter..haha...So many options

You'll be 28, or 19 years younger than I am now
I think my advice before was to buy a Toyota Corolla. I'd still stick by that for someone barely out of diapers The money you save can be spent on zit cream

Steetstang, where in SC are you?

I am 43 now and look back at the cars I gave up when I was your age and cringe. A 69 351 Mach 1, a 71 Mach 1 a 70 TA340 Challenger. All great muscle cars. I only wish I kept all of them.

If it were me, I'd keep the 67 and save it for another day. Your insurance and taxes for it aren't more than $300 a year are they?
Why not save your money and get an earlier Cobra? Maybe a 99? I personally like the 95-97 body best. The 2003/2004 is soon to be last year's body anyway.

I have a 67 and a 97 Cobra and love both. I paid $10k for a low mileage Cobra with a supercharger in Charleston last summer. Both cars are at my website "mikesmustangs.net"

Do go to school though. School is much easier to deal with having a nice ride.

Good luck.

Keep the Explorer, my 96 has 150,000 on it, still going strong with the original spark plugs.

If I only had an Explorer during my college days of the late 60's and early 70's, the things I could have done

I think you already know what you want to do, or you wouldn't ask the same question again. It must be nice to be 18 and have a 67 Mustang and a 97 Explorer.100,000 so whats the problem ? Drive it and serve it every 3000 miles. As for the 67 if your done with it, or no longer want it then sell it. Other wise find a way to keep it around. Like others have said I regret having to get ride of cars in my pass too. I not sure you'd get $12000 for the 67 either ?

"The mustang is cool and all, but its not a good daily driver for obvious reasons (gas mileage, reliability, etc.)" I don't get it whats the bad part ???

The dealer wouldn?t take my wife?s 95 Explorer with 104,000. They said it was to old and didn?t sell anything that old! It runs good and other than the usual maintenance things plus an idler pull we didn?t have a problem with it. Anybody interested?

Im not sure how much money you have but by selling the explorer and the 67 you need to get good money to get close enough to buy an 03 cobra or similar. But then theres the insurance.

Lets say you get 6000 for the explorer and 10,000 for the mustang - both somewhat optimstic estimates. thats 16,000. Youll need another 15,000~ish to get into an 03 cobra (they still command a good price used). on a 5 year loan thats about 300 bucks a month just for the purchase, but then youll need another 200 a month for insurance. 500 a month. If you have $500 a month spare I would be spending it on the 67 to make it more reliable and quit thinking about giving all your money to the bank or to the insurance companies.

at 18 years old fast cars like the cobra, or a camaro SS are highly NOT-recommended. You give too much money away in insurance. Your best bet is to stick with the cheaper to insure and more stylish classic and modify it to go almost as fast/reliable. I know guys who had a great driving record and earning good money who got sick of insurance premiums on fast cars and they were in their early 20s not 18. it doesnt become feasible till your 25 - sorry but thats the way it is. Some things you really have to wait for.

One other thing. While an 03 cobra might impress your guy friends - a 67 that runs smooth and powerful will impress the ladies a lot more. Sometimes its not all about the 1/4 mile time or the hp but about style points. At 18 I would have killed to have a classic like a 67 mustang. I can barely imagine how much tail I could have got with a car like that... Hmm at least one or two anyway. Its got cool factor. For guys and girls your age its Retro cool.

streetstang67- as my handle implies, I'm an old fart. I purchased my first Mustang, a 1968 red fastback in 1979. Since then there has been a wife, two kids, moved three times and changed jobs four times. The Mustang didn't always run, but it was mine and it was therapy when I needed to chill out. I sold it in early 2001. At the end of 2001, I found a '67 convertible and all the good folks here to help me. The closet street-racer in me misses the fastback, but the cruiser in me enjoys the convertible.
Not to sound like my Dad, but you are young enough to rebound from any decision you make. Also, life is about comprise. I exist on $35 a week allowance and my daily driver is a 1995 Saturn-(sorry guys- Ford wasn't dealing on the Contour it's first year out) Follow your heart and exercise a prudent budget. And go to school, haven't you ever seen that poster that has a caption of "justification for higher learning" and a picture of a beachfront home with a six car garage filled with exotics?
When all else fails, PRAY. It is what helped me find the convertible.
Good luck, Charlie
