How important is it for me to have harden valve seats installed in my 1969 351W when I do a valve job. Man of many questions???

This is one of "those" questions. I've spoken to many folks who know for a fact that you should replace them, and just as many who know for a fact that you don't. If you're not doing a lot of high rpm driving, and if the seats are still in good condition, you can leave them as is. The valves on my 302 are not hardened, and I looked at them recently (I had the engine rebuilt five years ago) and they look as good now as they did then. But then I'm a low mileage, low rpm driver.

Like fastbask68 said, there's people on both sides of the fence on his one. Personally, I think it's cheap insurance to have hardened seats installed.

I vote for the cheap insurance part of the deal. You were most likely going to grind the valves anyway so you can't really factor in that cost.I say replace them. Cheers, lonewolf

Thanks for the great information. I am going to insatll harden seats. The cost is not that great and its good insurance69 sportroof 351W 4V
