I've got a bunch of rear brake drums from Stangs, and they all indicate that you should throw them away when the internal diameter is 10.060 inches. I'm curious what diameter new drums are. Thanks! Simon

Hmmm, I wonder. I've got a precise 10-inch ruler, so I've got one drum that is still 10 inches. It seems unlikely it didn't wear at all in 30+ years.

sorry Simon, just making an assumption based on the fact that my Mustang has either 9" or 10' drums depending on whether it came with a 6 or an 8 cylinder. does a tolerance of more than .060 seem right? Of course, I'm not sure I would trust just a ruler as opposed to calipers to measure the drum with.------------------ http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang [This message has been edited by adragon8u (edited 01-06-2004).]

Someone, somewhere knows the answer to this Has anyone ever bought a new brake drum? They say they're the most overlooked item on a car.

Simon, Looked in my manual and it shows the drum ID to be 10.00" for a new drum. The drum you have that doesn't show any wear could have been replaced or is off a low milage car. Rear brakes realy don't take that much punishment, but I bet if you used a mic you would find the ID is over 10", even with a precision ruler it is hard to see .010" or .015". ------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V engineless at the time! 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

Thanks Ronnie, and Mike, you were spot on! The reason I started thinking about this is 'cos I have one drum that came out of a car that I later found had the wrong bearing in the axle - too small. I think the axle was wobbling slightly. Anyhow, the drum was gouged way over 10 inches in places. But who'd have thought that a 10-inch drum should be thrown away when it measures just 10.060??? I'm wiser now.
