I have a 69 mach 1 351 W with a dead motor, time to rebuild it or put in a hemi. I have a 4 speed tranny. What motor will drop in with the least problems. What will bolt up to the tranny. Which motor will I have to cut the shock towers. 390? 428? 429?
460? Which motor has the highest tourque and horsepower,

azwhiz,

You can put any of the motors listed without having to cut the shock towers. The BOSS 429 required modifications to the towers.
The 429/460 is the only engine that was not an option in the 69, but it will fit in the engine bay. I think that Crites makes a engine swap kit and headers to install the 429/460 engines into a 69.

Just looked at your post again, your question about the 4 speed, if it is behind the 351W now then you have a small block bell housing and it will only fit behind a 289/302/351W/351C. You could get a big block bell housing, but I think the 4 speeds are also small block or big block specific. The trans might not stand up behind a big block for long.

The easiest thing is to rebuild your 351W. You could even build a 393 or 408 stroker and have more than enough power for a street car.

As said, build a 393 or 408 stroker out of the Windsor. Its a strong engine and with the right parts you'll make more power than you'll even need. Plus you can tell those chevy boys you just kicked their ass with a 'small' 351W. This may be less of a hassle for you than trying to squeeze a 385 series big block in there.

Or changing plugs, tightening header bolts or for whatever reason you have to fish around down along side of the engine.

I have a 69 Mach pro-street with bored and stroked 460 to 528cid and 4sp. I think it's easy to work on, in fact changing plugs is easier than my other 69 Mach with 351C.
