I just installed a brand new Deluxe(Pony) steering wheel on my 65. Now when driving, the horn blows sometimes when making turns. It doesn't do it all the time but enough to certainly be a nuisance. I don't think it's the steering wheel because I had the same problem with the Lecarra wheel I used to have on it. The only difference being the horn wouldn't blow unless I made an extremely tight hard turn. I tried to duplicate the problem by jacking up the front of the car and turning the wheel but no luck. There's something about turning the wheel against the weight of the car that sometimes causes it to short and beep the horn. The turn signal switch was replaced several years ago so I don't think that is the problem. Has anyone experieced a problem like this or have any ideas of where to start looking for the problem ?

RobertK, I had the same problem in my 70 Mach.I ended up disconnecting the wires to the horn.I guessed it was a bad switch, but I never did fix the problem.Perk

Robert,

Something is causing the horn circuit to ground when you are turning the wheel. Since it was happening with the other wheel also it could be the cup that holds the spring and wire is damaged or pushed out of place. Another thing theat can cause this problem is if the upper bearing is loose in the steering column allowing the wheel to move over slightly. Disconnecting the horn doesn't solve the problem, it just gets rid of the nuisance. I would pull the wheel back off and look at the spring, wire, and plastic cup real good to locate the ground.

I tend to agree with Ronnie in that it could be the steering shaft shorting out against the steering column or something else. Is there something that's supposed to keep the steering shaft perfectly still in the steering column (a bearing maybe) ? There is some play back and forth (not in and out but left and right up and down) of the steering shaft but I don't know how much is allowed. I haven't had a chance to take it apart again but I'm determined to fix it and not disconnect the horn.

For the benefit of other owners with potentialy the same problem, I would like to give an update on this problem albeit quite after the fact. It turns out that my car was missing the steering column tube bearing sleeve. This is basically a white plastic tapered sleeve that rides on top of the bearing that keeps the steering shaft centered on the bearing. I cannot believe that a $1.00 part (literally) could have caused me this much grief. It's not until Ronnie T mentioned the "cup" that I looked at an exploded view of the steering assembly that I realized that I was missing a part. I went ahead and replaced the bearing too while I was at it. It's no wonder my horn wasn't working correctly. Note to self: make sure car has ALL parts before trying to trouble-shoot.
Thanks for everyones help on this one.
