I have an 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis that has a tranny that is about to go out. I was wondering if this 5.0 v8 is the same that is in the 5.0 mustangs, and if it could be swapped into a '65 mustang that has a I6. If there are any websites that have more details our any thoughts from any of you then it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

They aren't the same, the Mustang 5.0 is a High Output, with a hotter roller cam, double roller timing chain, forged piston in some years, better intake, different computer, etc.

Do you want the FI? If so find a donor 5.0 mustang. Moneymaker did have a 88 5.0 harness and computer for a Mustang you could do the changeover that way or just put an intake and carb and change the cam to something alittle hotter ie: FRPP B-303 cam or E-303 roller cam. Justa My $.02
Should be very doable either way.

I am about to do the same conversion with an 88 Crown Vic motor. They are rated at 150HP instead of 225. It's still a better motor than a stock 289/302 IMO. Remember cars are now rated at the flywheel, not the rear wheels like they were back in the 60s. After you get it installed you can always change it over to the 5.0 intake and mass air system. You will learn so much about EFI, and your car will run better and get more milage. I plan on keeping the AOD also. You should rebuild yours (AOD)and install it.

All advice above is good. Save or install the engine. Definitely keep the AOD...plan to rebuild it yourself. Seriously, it's not that hard. Buy the Tech manual by Haynes. I did mine and swapped it in with no problems. Took it to the local trans shop for TV cable adjustment.

Also, if it has rear drum brakes, save the all the parts and swap them on your mustang. Everything fits. Have to pull the c-clip axles, easy. Start with the backing plate and save all else. Direct swap...40% more pad area. God love those Grand Marquis and Crown Vic's. It's sad to see all that luxury rotting in the noon sun at a pick-a-part yard.
