Did you get your Jan '04 issue yet? Did you get the 2004 M&F calender with it? No? Neither did I. I didn't realize this till I
decided to kill some time and browse through the same issue at the local grocery (while the wife shopped!!). As I turned the pages I realized there was a real nice 2004 Stang calender stapled in it that I (a long time subscriber) didn't get!

I've fired off an email to M&F asking what's up.

This same topic came up on another board. Mine didn't show up till this past tuesday & without the calender. I had bought one in the grocery last week with a calender. The general concensus was it was a marketing thing for the newsstand copies only.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Magazine calendars are never worth anything anyway.

Welcome to Mustangsandmore, Bud!

Apparently I renewed my subscription before I was deployed last time, and forgot to tell Casey, as none of the payment requests were paid (she thought they were renewel offers and threw them out, not paying enought attention to see they were actual bills). Didn't realize the mix-up until we got a chastising letter from a collection agency requesting IMMEDIATE payment. Oops.

Getting to the point, I didn't exactly get the new issue yet, and even if they were giving out calenders to long-time subscribers, I still wouldn't have gotten one.

Anybody know if they would have tried to re-possess my back-issues if I hadn't paid?

Thanks!!! I have been looking for the boards that deal with the older stangs. I just sold a 98GT Vert to pickup this 67GT Fastback S code car. Had one in high school and have always missed that car. Found this rust free one and jumped on it. So I have to learn all the old FE motor stuff again and all the other things I have forgot in 30+ years....lol

Thanks again!! Looks like a great place to hang out!! I'll try not to ask to many stupid questions....lol...I have been a member for awhile just lurking and reading. I plan on restoring as much of the car as possible since it's been tubbed and has a cage in it. Just finished redoing the dash and working on the carpet now. I was shooting for a year until it would be finished. At the rate I am going maybe 6 or 7 months. I havent had this much fun working on any of the other ones I have owned. So the desire to finish is driving me hard...lol...This is going to be the last one and the best one I have done!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!!! Have a safe holiday!!
Bud

I finally got a response. I am not impressed. You would think they would offer subscribers SOME kind of customer service. And a yearly calender is not too much to ask for, IMHO, especially when the counter version has one.

I've been thinking about not renewing anyway...don't like the direction this rag is going. They just made my decision for me.

Dear Subscriber,

In regards to your inquiry, the calendars come with the newsstand issues only. This is the publishers decision.

Thank you

Dear Mustang and Fords,

In regard to your response, please cancel my subscription and refund my money. This is the customers decision.

Thank you

I understand the marketing idea behind this but the response you received sounds kind of snobbish.

In all fairness, the buck-sixty per issue that subscribers pay only really covers the cost to print and bind the book, and mail it. These magazine subscriptions are incredible bargains when you analyze it from a what-you-get-for-what-you-pay standpoint ($1.60 barely gets you a 64 oz. Big Gulp). Don't get me wrong, subscribers are the heart & soul of the magazine, and very valuable to the financial picture, but subscribers are getting a whale of a discount compared to newsstand. Thanks to the advertisers and newsstand sales picking up enough slack, the books stay in business. Whatever they can do to boost newsstand sales is an important business necessity, and by inserting the calenders, the only way they can justify that expense is to profit from it via increased newsstand sales and the ad space within the calendar. When they insert calendars, they sell more on the newsstand, which hopefully pays for the expense of doing the calendars, and HOPEFULLY increases their subscribership when those newsstand buyers have the subscription card fall in their lap while they're on the john and they realize, "hey, I could get a whole year's worth of these for $19.97, and I just had to pay $3.99 plus tax at WalMart! But at least I got this calendar!.....". To spend the extra dough it would have taken to produce and print and insert the calendars into subscriber's magazines and mail them (extra weight costs extra postage) would look like this on a Profit/Loss statement:

Calendar Expense: $$ a ton of money $$

Calendar Revenue from Subscribers: Zip-Zero-Zilch.

The publisher is in charge of the business end of the magazine, which means sometimes making some cold but necessary decisions. Now, I'm sure that one argument is that by not inserting the calendar for subscribers, they are loosing subscribers, or not properly appreciating their subscribers. I think that number would be incredibally low, not enough to justify the expense of the calendars. Those are my thoughts. It may not have taken much more money to go ahead and give EVERYBODY a calendar for all I know, but obviously, the publisher looked at the whole thing and decided otherwise. But there's nothing surprising or new here. It is COMMON PRACTICE for all magazines that newsstand books and subscriber books receive different treatment, tailored to the unique needs of the individual markets. I've commonly seen value-adding things poly-bagged in with Car & Driver and Motor Trend on the newsstand, that I never got with the copy in my mailbox. Even cover designs can be different on those magazines, with the newsstand cover being flashier and more attention-getting. I never give it a second thought, that's the publishing business everywhere you look, not just Mustang & Ford.

I just thought that the reply 460-67Stang received had a kiss-off ring to it. The money I'm saving by subscribing is enough to buy plenty of nice calenders.

Next year the folks who got a calender from M&Fords newstand copies will be suscribers as a result and will scream for THEIR calender next year. LOL! That reply from M&Fords had as much tact as a turd in a punchbowl. It took a management decision to segregate the calenders. A wiser one would have been no calender at all!

A month ago they sent me a terse letter that my subscription lapsed. As a result, got no Dec issue. Jan issue came and then Feb. with a expiration of May, l4. AM going to let it lapse along with Mustang Times. That'll put me down to MMonthly and Hemmings.

Inresponse to the costs of the calander. "they don't have to publish a calander every month only once a year"

Man I just fell off my chair LOL. That's too damn funny. Gonna remember that one and recycle it!

Yea, I thought the response was a bit turse myself. And I understand RICKS points and I can't disagree. Controlling costs is a way of life for business these days. Heck, they'll probably start editing and printing from India next (spoken like a true outsourced IT guy...but that's another story).

I just thought they'd send me a calendar since I asked for it.

Later guys,
Brian
