Whats the best way to go to put a 9 inch under my pony. Track down all the parts and cut down a 9 inch or just buy an all ready made one from the many suppliers on line. Whats the average cost of building one ? It looks like I can buy one from Quick Performance $1090.00 www.quickperformance.com

I think it really depends how lucky you get at the junk yard. Rears close to the right width of a 65-66 are very few and far between. My own recent experience has been that after scoring a 9-incher from a 73 F100 - highly recommended by racers for its housing and 31 splines - I started weighing all the costs of converting. First, you have to find a really reputable workshop to shorten the axle housings, then you have to shorten the axles or buy aftermarket, then (in my case) you have to wonder whether to convert the backing plates or install a pair of truck rims, etc., etc.
I've put it back up for sale for what I paid! If you can get a custom-made rear for $1,000, it could be the way to go.
