I'm starting this new post as an addendum to "HOW MUCH IS A GOOD PRICE ON BODY WORK TO A 68 MUSTANG?". There is a state prison here in Nevada (about 65 miles from Las Vegas) that has an auto restoration work program for inmates that does most of the work for and is sponsored/partially financed by the Imperial Palace Automobile Museum based here in Las Vegas. They also do a lot of the work (not sure if it's body or frame) for Shelby American. I've seen some of the work they do for the Imperial Palace and it looks darned good, but I'll make recommendations until I see how my car comes out. The prices they quoted me were quite attractive:
- Remove and replace all chrome, door handles, window trim, windshield, rear window, weather stripping, etc. (replaced with as much new stuff as I provide)
- Strip entire body to bare metal using a combination of chemical and walnut shell blasting (including door jambs and inner trunk).
- Perform all minor body/sheet metal repair (rust repair and serious damage extra on a case by case basis, my car is totally rust free).
- Strip and repaint engine compartment and inner fender areas. ($100-$150 extra)
- Block sand and primer, etc.
- Repaint with standard paint (?whatever that is?) my color choice. Specialty paints for the price of the paint, etc.
- Strip and repaint metal interior surfaces (they say that they can do the disassembly and reassembly but I'm going to send it to them already stripped of carpet, soft trim, instument cluster, heater/AC assembly, etc.) for $100-$150 extra.
- Price over the phone before them seeing the car or any extras $2,200-$2,400
Please note that I plan to send them the car with no drive train and all of the front end (fenders, hood, grill, etc.) removed. I'm still torn as to whether to do the complete front suspension rebuild before or after the paint job (they won't R&R the suspension/steering parts) I also am not sure yet whether or not they use a rotisserie and strip and paint the underside for this price, but I plan to find out. I will keep you all posted as to the details, progress and quality of work. This sounds like fabulous deal if it all works out. It seems like a $7,000-$10,000 job for under $3,000. Remember that the guys doing the work are not charging by the hour and have nothing but time! Any thoughts and comments on the order that I should do things would be greatly appreciated. Sounds like a really good deal! My only question, and it may be a moot point, but where does the money you pay go? I.E. who gets your 2 to 3 k. since the work is being done on state property? by state inmates? ------------------ http://webpages.charter.net/adragon8u/mystang

Im guessing that the money goes to keep their tools in good shape and to fund the consumables that a project like that takes. walnut shells filters face masks sandpaper tape you get the idea. Sounds like a great idea and a good deal. Something about it feels risky though. Like a high school project, they will be learning as they go. Im sure it will come out great though Im just a paranoid worrier when it comes to leaving my car with people. ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

Gene that sounds like a good deal to me. I'd check to see what kind of paint they use first.------------------

Thanx for the replies guys, Not sure of the "standard" paint, but I can have them use whatever else I want to purchase. Also, they say they will need to have the car for 2 to 3 months. Gene

The "speedchannel" did a show on that facility and they do amazine work. Like you mentioned, they do work on the Imperial Palace Museum cars and from what I saw on the shows it is first rate. They don't cut corners and do first rate work, or they won't do it. The money they get from the "outside" work is used to pay for the supplies, tools and also the prisoners time, which is soemthing like $1/hour and that way their pay doesn't come out of the state's funds. Sounds like a win/win situation to me and the price they quoted is very reasonable. I say jump on it with both feet. heck if they were closer I'd be going there myself.------------------ Duane 71 Fastback (his) under resto (351C-4V C6 auto) 73 Mach 1 (hers) (351CJ 4 speed) 66 289/2V coupe (daughter Ashley's) 89 LX 2.3 convertible (daughter Amanda's) M & M Member #730

That is a real good price.I too seen the show and it looks like they do good work. The price of 2200-2400 is probably a 1/3 of what it would cost at a body shop.------------------ http://ourworld.cs.com/blagintony/myhomepage/auto.html 86-302 HO bored .030 over crank .010 under, B-303 cam ,harland sharp roller rockers, performer rpm intake, 625 carter 66-289 heads, ported with 160-194 valves, 3 angle valve job, 4 speed toploader, granada disc brakes, 85 duraspark ignition, pony interior, the who,the doors, and ccr full blast on the stereo
