someone should start a website that highlights Mustang abuse and have a.. Winner? each year highlighting the worst case of Mustang abuse for the year and post it on the web. Only then maybe we can stop this insanity!

I love you diehard Ford guys. If it its not stock you squirm like a worm on the hot roadside burm maaaannn.

Dont get me wrong, I like Ford vehicles but even some of those stock Fords look like puke, i.e. the Pinto!:P

Okay, now that I have stirred the stink I'll depart from this post.

you mean those explode on impact cars? I put those right up there with the corvair(uh oh)
I couldn't care less about the pinto, but classic cars from the 60's? that's a different story. I'm not a purist by any means, but doing that to ANY classic is blasphemy in my book.

I don't like stock either.

But I hate bastardized. This guy turned a classic musclecar into a clown car, and that's sad.

If only you could have seen the little blue Pinto TomP and I saw at HAN. You might change your mind on them.

As a former owner of a spanking new 1971 Pinto, I take exception to the Pinto bashing. Mine was a black, 4spd, 2000 cc OHC version and it was pretty sharp with the aftermarket wheels and performace tires. The early Pinto bodies were quite good looking and make great V-8 converted restomods. All fixed up, they evoke a similar exterior design as an early Camaro in a smaller package. For those younger guys, the Pinto 2000 cc OHC engine was a great engine with a real racing heritage. I enjoyed beating up on those Vega GTs back in the 70s. The Vega guys just assumed that since they wore a "bowtie", they were automatically faster than the Pintos; however, they didn't stand a chance! I recently read about Pintos still being a viable option for competing in certain road racing organizations; and they have long been used in mini-stock car races.

I totally agree with Bernie, and have owned a brand new '71, 2000cc, 4spd, with 355:1 rear and staggered rear shocks. It was nothing to put a bone stock "squinto" into the mid 17s (around 95 mph through the traps IIRC no 60ft back then) while the larger (2300cc) Vega GT struggled to get into the high 22s. Mid 17s sounds funny but you have to remember that they were as low-tech as they come, but advanced for the times. Carbureted, but with a really nice Webber 2 barrel that was a mechanical primary/secondary rig. The exhaust manifold was not just a straight cast iron log but was actually tuned for smooth flow.

As far as being a fire trap, I dunno. Mine was hit from behind by a school bus that had been converted to a roll-up race car carrier. No fire. It was also hit from behind by a dweeb in an Opal GT that slid under it. No fire either.

There's also running in Bernie's area (and formally my area) one bitchin' Pinto 302 complete with a BDS 6/71 supercharger.

One last rant, it was nothing to get 150-175,000 miles out of a 2000cc Ford engine. While GM's answer to the early 4 banger fad of the early 70s may have lasted 15,000 tops. (many actually started smoking at 8-9,000 mi.)

In the late '70s I bought a '73 Pinto 2000 with 65k miles for $75, drove the snot out of it for another 100k miles while feeding it cast off parts and tires from our dealership and fed it used oil from my Sprint and then sold it for $100.

That thing even hauled engines, transmissions, and rear ends for me.

Remember the pimp kits you could get for them?

It was stick on stuff that came with a 'Rolls-Style' radiator/grille cover and a continental kit for the back. With a set of JC Whitney phoney wire wheel hub caps, a suicide knob, and a sun-roof-top from Pep Boys, you could really get your Bling-Bling going.

Best add-on kits that I can remember are the ones that made the beetle look like a 40 ford. the beetle had the right back end to make it work.(pretty much)

I remember the kits for the vw bug, I thought the hood that looked like a '40 Ford was cool, but I don't remember seeing those on Pintos.

I almost bought a 289 Pinto some guy in high school had, I remember it was brown and the stock 289 2bbl went around town humiliating many a musclecar.

At a later point I bought a '71 Pinto for $35 that I was going to stick a V8 in, but that project came to an end when someone offered me $350 for it and I couldn't pass up the profit.

Maybe the kit was for the Mercury Bobcat. The were already half way there.

Remember the Pinto with the removable wings and rear 2 stroke prop-engine that replaced the trunk lid? During a demonstration flight, the wings separated from the Pinto in mid-flight. Not good news for the inventors/pilots.

What the hell is wrong with everybody? So now it looks like dog puke so what, it is nothing that a restoration job won,t take care of, I am sure that alot of us have put more money in our cars then it would take to put this one correct. Just consider this car the ugly duckling for now but with a bit of time, effort and money it can once again be a swan. I am very surprised at the direction this thread has taken, if we are going to give up on a Boss 302 so easily what is next? will we all be driving chebbies or ricers? Shame, Shame, Shame

Thanks I could use a LARGE family car.
My son does kinda like the 69's. It would a good starting cr until he's ready for a 65-66 Mustang.

You should never start a kid with the best car. Let him bang around with a '65 first.

Im curious:
Do the 67-68 mustangs qualify as "boats" or are they lumped in with the roller skate 65-66 cars? Or as Sam would lead us all to believe are they the perfect size? One guy at a car show walked by my car and said
"this is where they went wrong with the mustang, by 68 they got TOO big"...

Anyway With all the fins and pimped out cars we should also remember the number of raised 4x4 mustangs on 35inch mudders that need dedorkification.

All mustangs for the most part are nice, but "THE 65`s ARE THE BEST", next in line are the 69 and 70 mach`s.

Personally I think anyone that calls ANY Mustang too big is a moron. The '69-'70 is about 3200-3400lbs, the '71-'73 is about 3400-3600lbs.

Go crawl under a '76 Eldorado {about 6000lbs, I think...} then tell me about BIG!
