I've got a 65 stang and with my recent 8.8 w/ 4:11 find (came in a package sorta deal). But I was going to sell that rear end and try to find a nice 8 inch posi.
What would be the right cars to try to get the 8 inch rear out of without having to shorten anything?
Also, where would be a good place to find an 8 inch posi and how much money am I looking at spending?

The best cars would be out of a 65-66 Mustang. As for the traclok unit you can look at v6 Pinto's Mustang II and Mav's all had 8" rears.

It sounds like you've already got an 8" in the car. Why not just change the whole center carrier pumpkin and replace it with one with better gears and posi? Easier to do and find, and cheaper than an axle swap.

No my car was an origianal six cylinder car. It had the smaller rear end w/ the 2.77 tranny. But actually I just found an 8 inch in the Atlanta Advertiser for 80 bucks. So that's that. But what's this about the pinto traction unit? Will it fit inside the 8 inch?

As described, Pintos, Mavs, and Mustang IIs used the 8" rear earlier Mustangs also used. The V6 Pintos, Maverics and V8 Mustang IIs used trac-lock rears. If you find one, it should bolt right up in place of your open 8".

Is there a way I can tell the posi rears from the open rears, so I don't have to go around pulling each individual cover plate off?
And was it only the v6 cars? Not the inline 4's?

On the pinto's I think it's only the V6. It only took me about 3 years to find one. 8" units don't have cover plates. I just try to turn one of the axles and see if the other turns with it in the same direction.More then likely it'll be a liminted slip unit. I found my in a 72 Mav,it was in good shape. The best $70 I've spent yet. A lot of those small cars came with 3.40 and lower gears too.
