We currently have a 2.80:1 limited slip third member in our stang. I would like to step it up to 3.55:1 gears. Would it be better to buy a new/used 8" third member, with 3.55 gears or buy a ring and pinion kit and replace/rebuild the one we currently have? Purchasing a made-to-order 3rd from Currie, Strange, ect. could approach $1500 Here's the gears http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=RMG%2D4901011 ...and the r&p install kit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=RMG%2D8310151 Unless you've got the precesion measuring instruments to set pinion depth and gear lash and a hydraulic press for the bearings, you might concider having a professional 'set up' the third member for you. Then it's a simple matter of re-installing it in the car and feeling the acceleration ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

While you're into it that far, it'd be best to put clutches in the differential. Here's the 9" kit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=FMS%2DM4700A for price comparasion. I believe the 8" kit is readily available as well ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html [This message has been edited by V8 Thumper (edited 10-07-2003).]

Dave I think it would less expensive to have the gears changed and have it rebuilt. The porblem with a used one is you'll have to rebuild it at some time too. You'll like the 3.55 gears a lot more. ------------------ SCOOP 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Thanks for the info, gang. I may go ahead and buy the used 3.55 and swap it with the 2.80. Then have a pro do a full re-build with 3.55s in the old 2.80 when the budgey allows for it. I can get the full re-build kit and gears from MAE for $249.00. The used third member is still cheaper than all of the above. I still have some time to think about it also. Ken, E-bay! Watched it for several days and had Alex check it out for us. Terri sniped it with 5 minutes left to go. Dave, why did you elect to stay away from the 9" rear?

Dave, It's not in the budget now and the seal for the third member in the stang has started leaking. I'm going to need to replace the leaking seal real soon. The chance to buy one with 3.55's came up, so I took the chance. We got lucky. Dave & Terri ------------------ '65 Mustang Fastback '02 Explorer XLT I don't suffer from insanity. Dave was that for a traction lock and the 3.55 gears both ? Or just a 3rd member with 3.55 gears open unit. I look at ebay at least 3-4 times a week.I don't see anything I want for under $500. ------------------ SCOOP 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Scoop, Looks like it's going to be a 3.55 open for the moment. It will be here Saturday and I will be able to get a better look at things then. It would be nice if it is a limited slip or a locker, but I'm not holding my breath. The third member was in a '63 Falcon.Dave & Terri ------------------ '65 Mustang Fastback '02 Explorer XLT I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!
