Hey there, I just joined the forum and have a few questions to ask anyone who will offer help.I have three 65-66 Fastback shells and not enough parts to make one good car out of the three. Can I squeeze a FE 390 into the bay of this car? Or should I go with a built small block vs. weight of big block? I also have a 68 coupe "J" code, running but needs some body work, paint, and interior. I want a sweet street/strip car to use as a driver so show car is not goal. Can I cut the roof off of one of the 65-66 donar cars and make a fastback on the 68 coupe body? I know there will be lots of metal work involved. The FB glass should interchange to coupe doors and rear glass is the same, isn't it? I also know that the 67-68 has a ridge on the roof and trunk. How will this affect project? I have been looking for a 67-68 roof section for over a year and no luck. The other option would be to take the entire undercarraige from the coupe and put the 65-66 body on it. Which way sounds better and will save me time and $$$ over the project? Thanks for anyone who can help, direct or talk me out of this idea. lambone Thanks for the advice. What about a CS clone on the 68 coupe? It is a San Jose plant car, Raven Black on black interior with original 302 ,4 barrel, auto, posi 9" rear. How can I find out what is needed for this kind of resto/mod? Has anyone out there done a CS clone? It would appear much less of an undertaking than a Shelby clone? If it was me I'd sell all the parts cars you can.Keep only the one thats in the best shape and as the most working parts on it.Sounds like it would be the 68.Take what money you get and build uo the car you keep. The 390 will fit in more easy and with less in the 68 better then in the 65-66 cars.Just my opinion. Welcome to Mustangs and More.If you wait some one a lot more smarter then me will come along. ------------------ SCOOP 2.26 60'S 14.9 @ 90.86MPH 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Welcome lambone You've got some pretty far-out ideas there! I'd forget squeezing the 390 in a 65/6. And I'd definitely forget chopping the roof off a 65/6 and putting it on the 68. Even if you can get it to fit (the lengths are different, I'm sure), the car will have zero resale value. You should consider an idea like Scoop's. You could trade all three 65/6's for a nice 68 fastback, and you'd be in business with no chopping at all. Whatever you do, don't do any of the things you are currently planning Simon

A California Special, huh? According to my book, you're gonna need ... 1) A blacked-out grille. Sounds easy. 2) Lucas or Marchal fog lamps. If these are the same as Shelby ones, they'll cost. But I'm sure you buy something close really cheap. 3) Fiberglass side scoops. 4) Fiberglass rear deck and quarter panel ends, same as the Shelby convertible. They ain't gonna be easy to find. 5) Fiberglass rear panel weith Shelby taillights. Aren't the Shelby taillights out of a T'bird? 6) Some stripes and script badges. 6) Louvered hood with twist-type hood locks. If you want to do a clone something or other, a 68 and a half CJ would be easier. I believe they made a handful of those as coupes.[This message has been edited by Fastback68 (edited 09-30-2003).]

I was referring to a California Special. If I understand it right, all CS/GT were made at the San Jose plant, as is mine. My car is a "J" code too. What I would like to do is make a car that is a little different than a regular coupe, and a CS is a little more than a coupe. If I took the 68 coupe and did a clone of a California Special, what would I have to do other than the tail lights, trunk, scoops, and badges? Did all CS's have hood pins? Are there interior pieces that are different? What wheels are stock and were there more than one choice? Did 68's have 14 & 15 inch tires? Who makes/sells the best fiberglass pieces of these parts? Thanks again

Here is a link to a beautiful California Special. I think they make cool restomods. A CS could be had with any motor offered in the Mustang at that time--I've even seen one with a 200 ci 6. http://www.mustangreview.com/1968csgt.htm Daniel

Well, It looks like "I'm goin' back to Cali'" I've always liked the lines of the CS.Now for the next question, would I be wiser to start off on one of the 65-66 fastbacks instead of the California Clone? The problem is they need EVERYTHING! Also, does anyone know about the wheel & tire questions I asked ealier today?
