That's cool! as nice as it is though, I'm glad they didn't go with it. I like the way the early ones look.

If anyone is interested, one of the model kit companies, I think either Lindberg or it may have been AMT, has released a 1/24th or 1/25th scale model kit of that car several times, including recently. I think that it is still available in hobby stores, or I am sure that you could find it on Ebay.

The group of cars was cool,with a GT500KR convertible and an authentic 289 Cobra.

I've got another disc for you,Steve! I went to the Kruse Int'l Auction in Topsfield Mass on Sat. There was a 3400 mile 71 Torino GT and an '85 Pantera Detomaso GT5-S,with 12K miles. It's one of only 60,with 17 in the US.

Cool! Man!...that baby has had some rough times in the past. Covered the front end up to envision my 66 cv with chopped top! Could definitely dig that! As long as the top was still functional. Could possibly be persuaded to drive that black beauty next to it, home!

In case any one didn't know, the appearence of the 'Mustang II' styling prototype from 63 was never intended to portray what anyone at Ford was considering for a production vehicle.
The actual styling of the production 65(64&1/2?) was mostly already set in stone.
Since the planned production version shared nothing with and looked not anything like the very popular 'Mustang' 2-seat open raodster show car that had been making the rounds for a couple of years, Ford decided to build a 'Mustang II' show car that would somehow 'bridge the gap' between the original roadster and the coming production vehicle.
The color scheme and striping layout is nearly identical to the roadster's, and the front end treatment as well as the fact that it is a convertible are intended to look reminiscient of the roadster also.
Ford was trying to 'hornswaggle' the public into thinking that the eventual production vehicle was arrived at by continually refining the original roadster concept.
Thats BS, as the production version was almost approved for styling production by the time the roadster was put in 'rotation' at shows around the country.
The 'II' was developed to help 'morph' the public's interst from the roadster to the production version as smoothly and effortlessly as possible.
Imagine if after they had shown the roadster all over for a while and everyone loved it( as they did!)then, with a flurry of ad copy, they would say "You loved it at the shows! Now, you can buy one of your own!", and then released the production version.
The fear was that a lot of folks would say "Thats nothing like the REAL Mustang! What a cheat!"
So, they try to manipulate the public's perceptions, and fortunately, Iacocca and his ilk were masters at it.
This makes me think of the Viper show car when it first came out. I loved it! But I absolutely KNEW they would NEVER build anything even resembling that show car. It was just too single-purpose and awesome to even consider it.
I figured they would take the then-current Daytona or Stealth and graft on some Viper-y looking trim and call it a Viper. Ho hum...
Boy, was I shocked that they actually produced that car as close to the original idea as they did! The few changes that were made were fairly insignificant, and the car is almost as the original designers intended. Ya' gotta' love that!
I have always liked the original Vipers for that very reason.

Anyone who followed the development of the Mustang from the original 2-seater to the production car knew by the time the Mustang II show car came out that the real car was going to be a 4 seater. In fact, the production car was pretty well determined by the time the Mustanbg II was unveiled. If you look at the pictures, what you see is the production Mustang with a custom front, rear, and interior. The "hard" points are pure 65 Mustang. Sure, I wanted the 2-seater, and was a little disappointed it became the 4 seat car; but it didn't stop me (and thousands of others) from being a customer. I ordered my 65 Fastback GT in the Spring of 65.

Notice too that it has the 1/4 trim from the 66 version. I also noticed that no one mentioned the removable hard top that was a part of the "II" series. It was one of the last things that was cut from the options when the 65 was introduced. The powers that be had intentions of creating the same "aura" that the T-Birds and Vettes had with thier removable tops. If you want to see one of the tops, go to the members car pic page and click on my photos. you will see one of them there. All that one needs is a new head liner, some new padding and a good cleaning and it is ready to go.
