Hey All,

My dad's '66 coupe has been shifting too early out of first. When regular driving and the shifter in the green DOT, it starts off in 1st and shifts to 2nd in the first 10-15 feet. It shifts so soft that you can't feel it if you're not paying attention.

Here's what i've done so far...

I've bought a new modulator thinking the old was was blown or something. I've adjusted the modulator in increments of 1 full turn with a total of 4 turns in with almost no change at all. I can sort of feel it shift now, but still way to early.

I've checked and adjusted the kickdown cable, but from what I know that only deals with downshifting.

I'm running out of ideas here... Band adjustment maybe?!? What would be a valid reason to adjust the bands?

Thanks in advance.

Erik

p.s. Please see my post regarding the carb soon.

I could be wrong here, but I think full turns are too much. it should only be turned about 1/8 turn at a time. it's time consuming but i believe will yeild better results. I wouldn't think that loose bands would make it shift quicker so i don't think that's your problem. I'm sure someone with more knowledge on this will correct me if i'm mistaken.

Erik,
It may not be the shift modulator. The modulator depends on vaccum pressure to help it shift. Check the vaccum line to see if it has holes and needs to be replaced. If you need a replacement line, you can order them from NPD. Also check the engine vaccum pressure if the line is good. When making adjustments to the shift modulator, you only need to make quarter turns. It is a P.I.T.A. but that is the best way to make adjustments. Hope this helps.

Eric.If you figure out your shifting too early problem please post the solution.Mine is doing the same thing.I did what Dave said to do,but only 4 times before it got dark. One time it did get better so I think I`m on the right track.A guy at work that is a chevy man told me that the rod in the shift modulator goes to a cam of some sort so it is hard to find the right spot.

Erik,

The soft shifting from 1st to 2nd is a sign that the bands may need to be ajusted. Under light acceeration the 1st to 2nd shift will be very early. How does the transmission shift under hard acceleration? Does it still shift real fast into 2nd, can you feel it when it shifts? The transmission may just be getting old and tired, the internal seals get hard and start leaking with age.
A stock transmission will shift softly under normal driving, when the cars were new if they shifted hard people would bring them back for service saying there was something wrong with them, I had to adjust a few when I worked for a dealership many years ago. Sometimes it was hard convincing people that just because they could feel the car shift that there was no problem.

Hey Ronnie, sorry for the late reply. But yes, under regular acceleration is shifts FAAAST, within the 1st 5 feet. You have to be paying attention to feel it.

But under hard acceleration it will HOLD 1st gear until max RPM and then shift hard into 2nd the way I have the vaccuum modulator adjusted.

Would this be a valid reason to adjust the bands? If so, could you provide some detailed instructions to adjust the 1-2 band?

Thanks in advance.
