ok, so I finally got the 65 up to a local tranny shop. I knew 2nd gear was shot and was hoping it was only the synchro. So the guy tears into it and shows me the damage. 2nd shot to hell (no surprise), but it turns out that 3rd and 4th aren't that far off from joining 2nd gear in the afterlife. As he only occasionally does classic cars, hes not sure he can get the parts (thru his normal supplier), I don't think it whould be that much of a problem thru a speed shop or one of the sites sponsors. Then he drops the bomb ... the rear is practically toast as well. He was hoping it would be the U joints, but they're fine. It wasn't that much of a surprise, I thought something was up. So, here is where I need your advice/comments/recommendation:Where can I get good tranny gears? If it has to be rebuilt, I want to do it right.
- Since I'm looking at probably $1000 job, would it make more sense to switch to a T5 (recent posters all say YES, but at what ballpark cost?)
- I'm gonna replace the clutch eitherway (rebuild toploader ot T5) ... what does everyone think of Centerforce parts?
- Are Hurst shifters anygood since the merger with Mr. Gasket ? I had heard that they had gone to sh*t since. Are rebuild kits available for the linkage ? Any recommendations??
- As for the rear, I might as well put a higher ratio in (currently 3.00 open), whats a good ratio for a fair weather car that will never see the race track, but might do a little stop light action ?
- Does anyone have a rebuilt or non-abused T5 they want to sell (or 4 spd)??
Unfortunately, I don't have the time or the knowledge to do this myself ... so any help is really appreciated. as always, thanks guys ... [This message has been edited by 65darkhorse (edited 08-14-2003).]

Sorry to hear about the tranny problems. For 4 speed toploader parts: http://www.4speedtoploaders.com/index.htm This is the website for David Kee who is like the GURU of toploader trannies!! I ordered some parts from these guys very knowledgeable. AND they work on them all the time. For the rear end, with a toploader (no overdrive) not sure I would go more than 3:50 on rear gears.------------------ Have a Wonderful Day CandyApple 65 Fastback 351W, Hooker Super Comps,4 Speed Versaille 9" Rear End Global West Front End [email protected]

You're best off deciding on a transmission before deciding on a rear gear ratio. The T-5's have a much lower 1st gear; the 3:1's you've got now would be well suited for that ratio. If you repair your trans or stick with a 4 speed, then you'll get dramatic results from a rear ratio in the mid to high 3's and still have reasonable freeway cruising rpm's. If you're interested in selling your 4 speed toploader core, shoot me an email ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

If you do not have more motor than a T5 can handle - go for it, especially if you do any cruising. I think the dual friction Centerforce in my 68 is the smoothest clutch I've ever driven in a Mustang. Are Hurst shifters anygood since the merger with Mr. Gasket ? I have 3.55 and really like them. Good acceleration and with the T5 good cruising

How much it would cost you to swap to a T5 really depends on how fast you need the parts, and how much you want new parts. I swapped the AOD in my '93 to a T5 for a little under $1000 for everything. I could have done a little better if I hadn't bought a brand new shifter (Steeda Tri-Ax) and clutch (King Cobra). You'll also need a spacer to do it in a classic I think. I know CJ Pony Parts sells all the stuff you need, NPD I think does also (site sponsor). If you bought everything you need new, it would probably run you $2000 (including tranny). Get a used T5 etc. and that'd drop quickly. As far as gears, I wouldn't go higher than about 3.27 with the toploader. With the T5 you could go a bit higher. I'm planning to put 3.73's behind my T5. Some will even put 4.11's, but those are race gears in my opinion. Don't ask Alex for his opinion!!
