i am replacing my dipstick and i was wondering what to use to make a seal so oil doesnt come out of the hole. can i just use something like hi-temp gasket sealent or is there something else to use that is made for this?

Which dipstick? Which hole? Could it be you're talking about the hole where the retainer for a tranny dipstick goes into the tranny? For that, there's a special O ring.

I assume you mean where the disptick tube is pushed into the timing cover of a 289/302 small block?
I didnt use a sealant when I put my dipstick in. In fact I used anti sieze so it wouldnt get stuck like my last one. I dont think oil should come out unless your engine is worn out or your oil level is too high.
Mine is a simple push fit and it doesnt leak. I guess a little Silicone RTV would do the trick if it did leak.

Jay just went out and checked 2 clevelands...1 had silicone the other an "O"-ring.don't remember either one leaking.......Jay (my name too)

so oil shouldnt leak out even if it want sealed. you guys should know but why not?? i would think that it would be squirting out. so it would be ok to use the RTV? i just want to make sure nothing goes in or out.
