Have a concern about the auto trans cooler on my 1968 with a 289. The way I have it hooked up is the fluid goes from the trans to the radiator, out of the radiator to the cooler then back to the trans. Noticed some are installed where the fluid goes from the trans to the cooler than straight back to the trans by-passing the radiator. What is the recommended way to hook them up? My thinking was I would get extra cooling by running it through the radiator first.

I rerouted mine out of the radiator and upgraded the cooler. No sense putting more heat into the radiator than it already has. My car runs hot as it is...

You should always have the regular radiator portion of the trans cooler hooked up, according to most trans mechanics. The hot radiator will help to get the trans fluid to operating temp quicker, which will make it last longer. That's the theory, anyway.
On the other hand, I installed a trans cooler on my MK-V many, many years ago and completely bypassed the radiator. The transmission now has over 300,000 miles on it with no problems. I do completely flush the trans once a year though. the

I can see where the heat from the radiator would keep the trans fluid from getting too cool too quickly but I dont see how it would warm it up faster. Afterall, if the trans is cool there's a good chance the radiator is cool as well which would mean the engine had to heat up before the radiator heated up before the tranny would heat up......

Just one more reason why I NEVER use a radiator trans cooler.
A separate trans cooler is always a better bet.
