For all you 71-2 owners with the sport lights in the grille, a little FYI.

The #94 bulbs are very tough to find unless you get then from a Mustnag house, and then end up paying $2 or more per bulb. I have found a couple neat things..

Try your local marine supply store, West Marine, BoatUS etc etc etc.

The bulb is a double contact bayonet base bulb, and there are several different candlepowers available.

#94 is a 15 candlepower
#1142 is 21
#1076 is 32

I picked up a pair of 94 and 1076 yesterday for under $6 with tax. Going to try them out, see how much brighter the 1076 really is, and checking to make sure it won't overheat the housing and melt anything

They also make a neat conversion base so that you can use miniature 21candlepower halogen bulbs.

I know how hard they are to find. When my car was painted, the body shop removed them and then lost them. I ended up buying a box of 10 from a auto aupply store. They had to order them and that was the only way they could get them, in a box of 10, or 12? and I had to buy the whole box. On the plus side I still have 8 or 10 of them somewhere if I can find them.

Steve,I think that the 1157 bulbs are the dual-element bulbs, and the 1156's are the single element bulbs.
I didn't think the 1157's would even fit in the sockets.
Of course, 1157's are the correct bulb for the 73 grill-lamps, which are also the parking/ turn signals.

I checked my bulbs and sockets on my 71 and they are definately single-filament bulbs ( 1156's), and the sockets are two-wire, single button style sockets.
My 73 however is a 3-wire, dual-filament style socket with 1157's.
The 73 style sockets would never eben fit in the back of thge 71-72 style sport-,amp housing.
Steve? What's up?

Maybe they were changed before I got the car in '77? {which wouldn't surprise me} I don't know. The sockets fit the back of the lamps perfectly.

The sockets on my harness are for the #94, which is a "double contact bayonet base" which is required as the housings are plastic and ungrounded, the power and ground are supplied by two wires. The two pins on the side are at the same height as well.

The #1157 is a "double contact index base", which has one leg of each filament is soldered to the metal base. The ground is either through the housing of the lamp, or a dedicated ground wire (ie, tail lights of the 71-73). The pins are offset at different heights to allow allow only one possible clock position of the bulb, hence the "index" description.

The 1156 is a "single contact bayonet base" where one leg of the filament is soldered to the base.

The only way to insert an #1157 in the correct sport lamp socket would be to file off the upper pin. The #1156 or #1157 should not even illuminate when inserted in this socket.

Steve, your sockets must have been changed at some time or the Sprints had some sort of adapter harness that plugged into the turn signal connector. BTW, the sport lamps on a Mach1 aren't supposed to blink with the turn signals.

Another thought is that Ford changed the bulb sockets for the sport lamps in mid '71. I've only had '71 Machs, so the only socket I've seen is the one that is on my car, which is a 12/70 built car. It's has a spring loaded metal socket that twists into the sport lamp housing. It's a real PITA to get in and out, I'm always afraid I'm going to break the lamp housing. I know my harness and sockets are original, as I just re-wrapped the entire thing last month, no splices or any damage.

I have had several 71's and 72's, and they all had the single element style sockets for the sport lamps.
None of the sport lamps on 71-72's are used for anything other than 'decoration'. They are wired to come on only with the headlights, not the parking lights. They do not blink.
All different for 73, of course.

Steve,

Are you talking about the sports lights on your 70, or your 72? I had a 70 MACH1 many years ago and I seem to remember the sportslights using an 1157 bulb with the dual filament sockets. An 1156 and 1157 bulb will interchange in the sockets, I have found the wrong bulb in many times causing problems. The 1157 bulb in an 1156 socket will light both filaments and make a lot brighter bulb. The 1155 bulb is the single filament bulb that will not fit in an 1157 socket.

That's what it has. The sockets are plastic, so they have two contacts, power and ground. I'll look at it and see what bulbs are in it when I get a chance. I thought there were 1157NAs, but I must be wrong. I do know they are natural amber bulbs, though. They don't blink, they just come on with the headlamps.

My '72 Sprint. They use the Mach 1 grille.
