How fast are these things really? Are they underated at 290HP? How much horsepower do they actually put to the wheels? Just curious about how they actually performed aside from the hype of being a "boss car". Compare it to like a 70 mach 1 with a cleveland 4V.------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX

From what I've read these motors were more suited to the track than the street. They had huge ports and valves that hurt low end rpms and thus street performance. The cleveland basically uses the same heads but the extra 50 cubic inches can make much better use of the heads. The boss 302s were built pretty stout right from the factory with 4 bolt mains, screw in freeze plugs, guideplates and were only available with manual transmissions. In pure street factory condition I think the Mach 1 would be quicker.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html

Not that anyone would really want to mess with a Boss (I would though) wouldn't a Boss 302 respond real well to a bigger cam because of those huge ports and valves?------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX

As a previous Boss owner December 69-June 72, I can say from the factory as a new car, it didn't run that well. But after adding a set of Hookers, A C7FE cam (LeMans Cam), 4.56 gears, Accel distributor, a double roller timing chain, and unplugged the rev limiter, it ran dang good. In stock trim a 351 Cleveland and the Boss were pretty even. ------------------ Mike Golliver MCA Gold Card Judge-Modifieds 65 Kcode coupe 347 stroker modified 5-speed MCA Retired 66 convertible-3 dueces and a 5-speed with a 289 89 T-Bird Super coupe 01 Mustang GT Convt

Thanks for the replies above- very interesting. While I'm at it though what made the Boss 351 soo much more powerful than a cleveland 4V. Besides solid lifters and equipment for endurance what was the major difference that made the Boss 351 much more powerful? Higher lift cam? More agressive intake?Just Curious again- Paul ------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX
