I'm having my car completely rewired, and my electrician can't figure this out, even with all my references (including Osborn's electrical manual).
In 67/8 (and other years?), the taillight housing has one bulb, with two contacts. These are supposed to handle the taillight itself, the brake light and the turn signal. My electrician can't figure out how to do this without adding another bulb. I told him I thought the brake light and the turn signal used the same filament, but he thinks this sounds crazy. Am I crazy?
I know other electricians have agreed with him in the past, 'cos I have SIX rusty old housings with new holes carved in them for extra bulbs!
Before he carves new holes in my new housings, could someone spell out what we're missing here?
Thanks as always,
Simon

Hi Simon

On my 66 coupe the brake and turn signal use the same filament. I would guest yours would be the same.

That's a good start -- thanks Steve! Now how does this work? I have the wiring diagram right here, so where does the magic take place that allows one filament to have two functions?

Aaah, oooh, Gene, don't disappear! My electrician doesn't come back for three days.

OK, we're back, and my electrician is still not happy Here's a question from me, not him ...
If you apply the brakes as you approach a turn (so both the switches are active at the same time), does the turn signal override the brake light, or does the brake light simply get brighter as the indicator flashes?

they both work indepently...when the brake is pressed the switch activates the brake light while the indicator flashes.

Take a look at your newer car..works the same way.

Simon,

the turn signal switch is just what it says a switch, when the turn signals are not activated the feed to both lights comes from the brake light switch, when you flip on the right turn signal the contacts in the TSS send the left bulb feed from the brake light switch and the right bulb power from the turn signal flasher, flip it to the left and the circuits are reversed.

I hope I did not confuse you too much, but thios is the only way I could think to discribe the operation of the TSS.

Ooo, Ronnie, let me just digest that. Sam, you say ...

The ol' indicator and brake using the same lens is an American thing, and even then it's dying out, right? I just checked out my Chevy Silverado, 2001 model, and it has a separate amber indicator lens.
