I take it this is a new problem. What have you added or done to the elec. system lately? The first "click: should be the run power and second is start. Maybe your starter relay is bad?

Have you messed with the wiring lately?

I would fisrt go and get a wiring diagram to make sure all the wires are in the correct place. If they are I would check for a short between an ignition wire and the starter soliniod wire.

Question,
is there any "resistance" when you turn the key right, like a spring action to "push" back to the "1st click" ?

Or does the key move to the right very ez with no efford.

Did you replace the Tumbler too or just the switch section?

anti hot link on the second one just click

Just a Thought,
Sounds like maybe the tumbler isn't properly engaged? ! I don't remember all of the particulars, but I seem to recall on an ignition switch swap a long time ago I had to do some sort of tricky manuever to get the tumbler to properly engage. Maybe a paper clip in the hole or something. I just know it was on my '68 same as yours.

Yes there is a small hole on the face of the tumbler you need to push the spring release in to seat the tumbler thats where the tension (resistance) is created that "pushed the key back to the "power" (1st click id you will).

I belive yuou also must have the key in to get the tumbler to seat but its been a few years

Make sure the small wires on the solenoid are not switched. That can cause the problem your describing.

You say that you did not install the nuteral safety switch, so did you Jump it out?? If so you may have a wire crossed. The reverse lights are powered through the NSS and if you have the ignition wire connected to the power for the reverse lights it will cause the problem you are having.
If you have the NSS jumped out remove the jumpers and see if the problem goes away.
