i am having a problem finding a starter that will fit my car. i have a 351 cleveland and a 4 speed top loader. but the thing that i think might be the problem is that the tranny is from a 1975 granada. i bought the tranny, bellhousing, and flywheel from the guy and everything bolted up to the engine and car perfectly with no problems. now i go to buy a starter and it doesnt fit. it is to big. the casing is hiting the oil pan right where it meets the block. i can get the top bolt in but the bottom one doesnt line up. its only about a half an inch off. and yes i have tried starters for both cars with different engine possibilities ( i have tried about 3 or 4 different starters) is it because the bellhousing is smaller? does this mean i have to get a new tranny and everything? please help!!!

Are you trying to use a starter from an automatic by chance? Back in the late 70`s, I bought a 4 speed toploader, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch linkage etc from a wrecker, to convert my 70 Mustang FB 351C 4v from the FMX to a stick. When I tried to install my original starter, it would bottom out inside the bellhousing, before the mounting flange of the starter was seated. The starter flange was sticking out about 1/4". That was when I discouvered that the starters for the 4 speed had a slightly shorter snout than the automatic. Something to look into.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Yup, what Rory said. Stick starter noses are indeed shorter.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." one of the starters i got (i think it was the first one i tried) was for an automatic then i heard that it was different between the autos and manuals so i stuck with the manuals and they still didnt fit. so i will look into the mini starters. and is the mounting flange supposed to slip inside the bellhousing or just rest on the edge on the outside of the hole? i have been wondering that also.

i have looked through the sites that were posted and i see that there are several different brands to choose from. has anyone here ever used one of these? are they dependable like it says they are and which brand would be the best one to purchase? i am thinking of getting one of theses because they seem like they would help me out in my situation.

I had a similar problem using a 157 tooth flexplate on a 351C. The body of the starter would hit the pan. I was able to roll the lipp of the pan back enough to make the starter fit. You should probably count the flywheel teeth since starters for 157 and 164 teeth flywheels are different. If it is 157, you can use the Ford permanent magnet mini starter. Dan Jones
