Last summer when I got my rebuilt 302 running, by the gauge in my 66 it would run real close to the h on my factory gauge when it was 85 degrees or hotter outside. So this winter I put a set of real gauges in my car. It now runs around 190 but of course its not 85 degrees yet. I would like to know what's the hottest my car can run before its too hot to drive? Thanks, Tony

I dunno. The electric fan in my Toro turns on around 206 or so and its ran for 80,000 miles at 212.

Is there is a difference in where you stick the sending unit? One in the head will give a hotter reading than one in the T-stat housing, right?

Tony,
What temp thermostat are you running? Also, do you have a fan shroud installed? Are you running a 2, 3, or 4 row radiator? Or the stock radiator? Just a couple of thoughts.

I wouldn't drive it over 220.

For what it is worth, mine seemed to be running warm according to the stock gauge as of late. Hooked up an actual gauge that reads in degrees, and it was showing 230+! I ended up changing out the $3 temp. sending unit, and now my factory gauge is right back where it was last year - around half way/straight up in the normal range. Never seen one do this before, so may be worth examining yours.............

I have put 2 sending units in my car, one when I put the motor in and one that came with my gauges so I dont think its the sending unit. I might not even have a heating problem I just wanted to make sure if it did over heat I would know how hot it can get before I shut it down. I have a 4 core radiator but I did have to get it fixed when I knock a hole in it putting on my fan blade which is a flex fan.Steve said not to run it over 220.Thanks everyone for your input. Tony

If you're running at 190, you're good as of now. That is probably about when your t-stat is opening anyway. I understand your concern aout the warmer temps though outside, as it warms up this year. I went through the whole gammet on other vehicles for high temps, and added ; 3 core radiators, 4 core radiators, flex fans, different gauges, shrouds, etc. This was the first time I ever saw a temp. sending unit read this far off - usually they either work right, or don't work at all. I do seem to have a problem with the $3 parts alot, it is expensive sometimes to realize that though with all the other money I'll throw at something before I realize it. Just a note for anyone else reading this thread, it was my first time having this problem w/ a sending unit.
