I have just installed a new fuel sending unit in my gas tank. When I fill the tank, the gauge reads 3/4 full. I will run out of gas when the gauge hits the 1/4 full mark. Which way do I bend the rod that connects to the float, up or down, in order to get a correct reading from the fuel sending unit.------------------

My first guess would be that you have the wrong sending unit, since you are out on both ends, full and empty on the fuel gage.Mike

did you have problems befor the change as you could have a bad wire that is reading to much resistance and your rod is not adjusted correctly put an ohm meter on it full and then empty to check your out put of the sending unit the do the same on the wire at the guage to see if you are in the ball park

Have any of you guys had a problem with getting the sending unit to seal at the tank? Well, I am! The tank and the sending unit is new, not bent or rusted. The compression rubber gasket looks good, but it still leaks. Would a silicone-type sealer work with the rubber gasket? Any other suggestions?? Thanks, Ryan

I installed a new sender on my 68.I used a new gasket (its a couple of bucks but takes the guesswork out of the job) it seals fine but i did make sure to clean up both surfaces too. Mine reads fine, although unlike modern cars it doesnt read above full when its full it just reads on the full line. You can test the system by grounding the wire on the gas tank or on a good ground nearby on the chassis. The gauge should read full if you ground the wire. If it does then you know the gauge and wire is good and the problem must be with the sender or the float. If it doesnt read full then maybe the wire, dash voltage regulator or gauge is bad. hope this helps Phil ------------------ '68 coupe 289 C code 66 heads, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust

I installed a new sending unit on my '68 about 2 yrs ago and have had no trouble out of it at all. All the suggestions above are right on. How do I know? Well I found myself asking the same questions when I was doing my install. If you are still getting a leak after using the vasoline, check, check, and re-check the gasket, tank, and sending unit for any scratches, pitting, or bent/dented spot. If all the parts are not flat you won't get a good seal. You guys are great! And of course, a wealth of information pours from your minds to the keyboard.
