I'm confused. Back when I had points, I had a Mallory coil mounted on my fender apron. When I switched to electronic ignition, I kept the coil and it worked fine. Now, just to clean up the wiring, I've switched to an original-style coil mounted on the intake manifold. The dealer said could use an original Motorocraft coil for points, but he thought it was probably better to go with a mid-70s coil for breakerless ignition. And sure enough, there on the D5 coil it says "for breakerless ignition". So what's the difference between a coil for points and a coil for electronic ignition? And will they both basically work with either configuration? Thanks, Simon

A couple of differences. One is the output. Typically point coils put out less than 20kv and BEI coil over 30kv. Also most point type coils are designed for 6 to 8 of primary voltage as the contacts cannot handle 12.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
