hi all, haven't posted in a while, been stuck here at college...w/out my car this time. Anyways I wanted to buy some new front fenders for my '66 coupe so i could have them sent to Idaho and then haul them up to Alaska when I drive back there in my truck...shipping to Alaska is outrageous. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy the fenders or give me some tips on assessing the quality of the metal/fit?

oh btw steve how's that new engine doing? still running?

I would try to find someone out there that has some rust free originals. I think Idaho might be good for that. They just fit better and the bodylines will match up no problem.

Thanks for the advice, but if I can't find someone with originals in my price range...does anyone else have any opinions on reproduction fenders?

I have one I got from NPD, it doesn't line up very well. Maybe a 1/4 inch off on the top. I don't like it very much, I'm going to get an original soon.

My front right fender is bad...its got bondo cracks all along it, the left side isnt that bad but I wanted to do this right, so I was just planning on replacing both. I might decide to only do the right side though. I live in Wasilla, so I'd be really interested to hear what other parts you might want to sell.

You can have all the body panels you want, they are just taking up space at my parents place.

I have all kinds of parts, I can't even remember all I have. What I can recall: wiring harneses, wiper motors, doors, lots of side glass, rear seats, corner caps, intakes, exhaust manifolds, and boxes of small stuff.

I will be back in Anchorage in May and will take some pics of the fenders and send them to you.

Jonathan,

Pictures would be great. As long as they are straight and have no bondo or much rust on them, I'm not to worried about paint or anything like that. I'll be home at the end of May anyways, but it would be nice to see them before I leave, if it turns out that the fenders are a little banged up I'd like to be able to order some and haul them up.

Thanks man you're a life-saver, I didn't think I was gonna find anybody in AK with 'stang parts.

-Bill

I have Ford service sheet metal on the front of my fastback and the fit is good. Ford no longer manufactures these pieces but check with your Ford dealerships for items still in stock. I understand Dennis Carpenter now makes these under Ford license. Not cheap ($400 per) but better quality than most of the aftermarket sheet metal...better quality equates to less finishing work and lower labor cost when compared to using aftermarket sheet metal.

I have one re-pop on my 69' and I never get tired of telling people how crappy these parts are (or were 6 years ago) for the 69's at least. I had to do alot of shimming everywhere, beating and cutting around the headlight area (fender extension), and drill all new holes to attach as they were way off (fender extension again). It looks respectable now, but way too much labor to make this fit and line up respectively. I could not find any 1969 fenders then, and still have not come across any that are good enough to use since. For some reason, I have ran across about 6 or 7 good ones for a 70', and did consider swapping noses at one time, but didn't. I paid $200 for the fender, and an additional $100 truck freight to boot. By the time their next catalog came out, they were no longer available. I called to ask why, and was told too many people complained, so they stopped carrying them - not surprised. I won't mention the supplier, because I have bought alot of nice parts from them and have no other complaints - excellent service and friendly staff also. On the other hand, I have always heard good things about the 65-66 repro fenders, but haven't used any myself to say one way or the other.

One of the guys I work with has a daily driven '66 coupe. Its clean but the body work is not perfect... Car has repro fenders. The things I noticed were the crease on the side for the side scallop are too crisp leading to excess height of the fender at the door. When the door is adjusted such as to clear the fender the gap is quite wide compared to factory fenders. If the gap is narrowed, the door collides with the fender sheet metal. The alternative is to shape the crease to lower it and this takes out the crispness of the crease. Neither choice is truly desirable but its one of the tradeoffs you get for saving dollars. The same fenders peak at the front above the headlight doors. Hardly noticeable but brings questions about workmanship.

I bought two new repo fenders for a 69, they were so far off everywhere I could not use them. What made me mad the most is yellow freight wanted 230.00 bucks by the time I made a box for them to ship them back. The parts house where I got them said they would refund the cost of the fenders if I paid the return freight. Well for 230.00 bucks and they get the fenders back to just pawn them off to another I figured the heck with that and just through both of the fenders in my parts shed and just repaired the old ones.
I'll be damned if I'll pay that to return them...It the point of the matter! I'll just use them for scrap sheet metal and cut what I need from them for patch repairs later!!!!!
Sorry for venting but every piece of repo sheet metal I've ever bought was junk!
I just returned a inner front fender apron, it was so wrinkled in the curves id have to apply 1/2" of bondo just to make it look smooth like the original.
Was only trying to spending the extra bucks to make it right, using the repo stuff was a step backwards thats for sure so just fixed my old originals that now look and fit perfect.

Jonathan,

I will be back in Alaska late next week, I would like to stop by and check out your fenders and possibly other parts. If you want, you can email me your phone number and I will call you for directions when I get back, or I can email you my number and you can call me whenever you have time.

Thanks again,
-Bill Stannard
