I know Grandes got extra sound deadening. But how much total weight's worth did they actually get? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the effort of pulling it all out or not.

I've heard the figure 50 lbs, but I don't know if that was serious or not. During my recently finished total restoration, I added about 15 pounds of rubber matting that wasn't originally there, and I couldn't have added much more. For what it's worth, I totally disagree with Iceman. I want to hear the noise when I open the windows, but when I want some peace and quiet, I'll have that option too.

Well, if there was any chance of it ever being quiet, it would be different. But dual 3" and turndowns just throws that right out the window.

The Grande's all came with an extra 55 pounds of sound-deadner, and it made a big difference. I also agree that it is nice to have a nice quiet car when you want one. My 71 429 Mach is a fairly loud car. Flowmasters and 3-inch pipes make some noise, but it is still very quiet on the inside. When I redid the interior, I put a good amount of the spray-in seam sealer in first, then I put in the best sound deadner underlayment availible, a little better than used in the Grandes. I also put a lot of 'insulation bags' in the inner panels to help some more. I got the idea from my 79 Lincoln. When I took the interior out for refurbishing, I found all the interior panels literally STUFFED with plastic bags filled with fiberglas insulation material. The bags are all seales so moisture and water won't get inside. So I made a bunh of these myself for the Mustang. I FILLED every nook and cranny thet I could find, and I covered the back of all the trim panels and door panels with foil-faced 'bubble' insulation. This all made a HUGE difference in the driveability of this car. It is much quieter than I ever thought it could be. There may be an additional 60 or 70 pounds of material in the car now, but I don't race it so it is of little concern to me. If you want a better driving, more comfortable car I highly recommend it! ------------------ 1971 'J' code 429 Mach 1 1976 'Starsky & Hutch' Torino (460) 1973 Grande 1973 Mach 1973 Convertible

Brilliant! I haven't put my interior panels back yet. This one I'm gonna try. Tell me, how seriously did you do this? Heavy-duty plastic? Heat-sealed? Or just ordinary plastic bags stapled shut?

I used the smallest, toughest garbage bags I could find, and a few large zip-lock bags. I sealed them with clear packing tape covered with duct-tape. I used the highest 'R'-value paper faced insulation for the 'stuffing', and I stuffed them pretty full. Then I stuffed as many as I could fit in the panels. In fact a lot more than what was in the Lincoln. You will be absolutely amazed at the difference this makes when you drive. Good Luck, and let me know how it works out. Yep, as said above grandes came with 55 pounds of sound deadening materials. I also read that some Mach 1's got the same treatment, maybe all but I'm not totally sure on that one. All I know is that my car is alot quieter inside than in any other vintage mustang I have been in.------------------ 1970 Grande H code 351W FMX
