Anybody have any good ideas on how to remove the 67 Styled Steel Wheel caps? The tire guys broke two of them prying with a screw driver. These are expensive, and I don't like to waste NOS caps.

I am tempted to go to the newer style of fasteners from Scott Drake. Anybody have any luck with them? I noticed they are darker than the originals.

Thanks,

Daniel

Can't you pop them out from behind like the Magnum 500?

Not sure on the styled wheels, but I have seen a few Magnum 500 center caps that were bolted on though the back.

That's one on me, Fish...
My factory 75 argent Magnums, the factory 79 argent Magnums, and all the chrome repos on the Mach1 and Ranchero had no provision for a bolt on type of a rig. The centers all have had about 15 or 20 spring steel 'teeth' that captured the center hole. I'm interested in the bolt on rig that you've seen. On the Ranchero and Mach1 wheels, I've drilled a small hole in one of the 'teeth' on each center and safety-wired them by pinching the wire between the drum or rotor and the wheel itself.

I can pop them out through the back... the fastener ring seems to want to hold on to the wheel rim more than to the rest of the cap itself, however, resulting in a broken mostly worthless mess if not careful.

I wanted to remove the rest myself before having the rest of the tires worked on.

I have accidentally separated the cap from the steel 'teeth' myself but I didn't actually bust the centers. Since I didn't have and still don't have a proper plastic welder, I took a soldering iron and re-stuck the teeth back on as best I could and and then melted a big ol' gob of hot glue from the wife's hot glue gun over top of that. They're close enough to the center of the wheel that there hasn't been a self destruct issue because of being out of balance. I actually rode along side to make sure they centered up nicely.

The best bet is to carefully remove them yourself before letting Goober turn them into plastic crumbs.

I think you may be thinking about the center caps on the Mach 1 sport wheelcovers. They look just like Magnum caps and they are held on with three screws. Too bad they don't fit on a Magnum, we've tried them.

Nice catch, Keem-o-sabe! I had completely forgotten about those. If memory serves, I believe the Missus had those, or something similar, on her 71 Grande.
