Yesterday the OP gauge on my '70 read zero while i was driving it around. I stopped, checked the oil, and was down by only 2 quarts. The engine wasn't making any clacking sounds, like it was low on oil. The gauges barely reads to the normal line sometimes...but not much more. So, any way to check the oil pressure? Or does this sound more like a sending unit crapping out? BTW: All the other gauges still read corrcetly

I would go ahead and replace the sending unit and connect it to a store brand guage and test before I drove it again. If you have a lot of miles on your engine, the main bearings could be worn so much that the oil is pumping around the crank journals and right back into the oil pan. Not too good for a camshaft or cylinder walls......

That wouldn't make any kind of strange noises when running? I always thought having low OP would make some kind of engine noises.

yea what 69 sportsroof said. you could probably get by without any rattling with very low oil pressure but if you had NO oil pressure, you would hear the lifters pretty quick. only two quarts low?? how often do you check it?

Has a little drip...in fact, 2 days ago I had perfect pressure, in fact it read at the high part. Maybe the gauge is crapping out, or the sender. And yeah, the gauge read at the very lowest part of the gauge when reading, so like almost pressure, but no weird noise, and the temp didn't change. If it is what 69sportsroof said would it be a gradual change, or instant change?

It would be gradual. When the oil is still cool it is thicker so it's harder to squeeze out around the bearings. I had an old Toyota Celica a few years ago that had 200k miles on it and that's exactly what it would do. When you first started it up it had good pressure. But within a few minutes, the pressure would start to drop. I'd still check the sending unit first...... Oh yeah, and fix that leak...

Fixing the leak the something I haven't yet done correctly since i have no place to park the car (needs a new oil pan) and work on it like that. Well, yesterday I drove the car for a long time before it dropped, and it was just like, BOOM, gauge says low. But I am going to check out the sender first, even the wire to it.

An update...turns out my engine was okay...it's the sending unit. So I'm relieved. Thanks to all that shared ideas on what it could be.
