car has been painted for 1 1/2 weeks. paint shop said dont wash for 1 week, wax for 1 month. what do i use to wash with on fresh paint? water and what else, soap or no soap. and if you have a 180' thermostat, in theory it should not go above 180' right?

Use a good quality car wash, there are all sorts on the market. I think we use Turtle Wax car wash here.

The thermostat regulates at what temperature the coolant will flow out of the engine into the radiator via the upper radiator hose. It holds back the coolant to allow the engine to warm up. It won't prevent the coolant from going over 180 degrees.

If you can manage it, you should not use any type of car wash soap on your fresh paint for about 6-8 weeks. that is a lot longer than most will tell you, but you want to give the paint every possible chance it can to 'harden' (cure) sufficiently before you start scrubbing it with anything.
Try just hosing it off without using atowel or mitt if possible. If you do use a mitt, be very gentle. Make sure you dry the car thoroghly after the wash so the water will not leave any 'residue' on the paint.

Steve, I must commend you on your description of the function of a thermostat: Most people think that a thermostat controls the engine temp. Not true-it controls the temp of the water, which will hopefully control the engine temp.

180 to 190 is very good, they should all run that good. I just had my 65 fastback painted and was told by the paint guy, that under no circumstances should I use any detergent car wash of any kind for 12 weeks, only a very fine mist of water on low pressure. Also said no wax of any kind or any kind of cleaner/sealer for 6 months, your paint is still curing and evaporating ( thinner ) from the paint, no car cover of any kind should go on the car for at least 9 months and better if no cover for 12 months. This is the best way to maximize your paint jobs full potential. It is a time consuming and some what restrictive process but well worth it, I did this when my 68 was painted and it sure paid off. Just the advice I have been given and have followed with my 68 ( now sold ) and am now following with my 65.
