The popular C-stripes (which can look pretty cool) were original on many 1968's and the CJ hood stripes (which look awesome with a scoop) were not put on enough cars, IMO. I also like the GT/CS stripe

Would there be any indication in the VIN number or anything whether those particular things came on a car orginally?

Well, I guess it's too late now 'cos you've gone shopping, but I was wondering if you'd considered painting them on. My 68 just got primed today, so I think I'll have them painted on before the top coat.
It probably isn't a good idea though unless you're doing a paint job anyway.
My 72 Mach 1 came (to me) with the stripes painted on, and they looked great -- until I stripped that car too.

Not on the VIN, but it would on the buck tag if it has one.

The Grande was the luxury version, as far as I can remember all they had were pinstripes.

That was available only with the louvered hood, I believe. It went from the signal/louver to the windshield at the cowl.

They were painted on-always in black. Have seen pics of cars with a white C stripe and the black hood stripes. It's correct but looks too busy.

Painting C stripes would be a job if you want them to be orig appearing. The tape stripes are bad enough!

I had all my stripes painted on.When your washing or waxing the car you don't have to worry about catching the edge of the decal. The CJ hood stripe was originally painted on anyway.I strayed from original by going with a gloss black instead of the satin.Although my car looks white it is actually diamond blue.

Can you put a clear coat or two over the tape after you put it on? Or, is it not compatible?

Also, the tape on the sides helped my car avoid some shopping cart dings before. Now that I don't have it, I've noticed a lot of little chips showing up.

I'm not sure if you can put clearcoat over the factory decals or not.I think they might be too thick but I don't know for sure. The decals might be better for a daily driver as repairs would definetly be easier.
