Al Barlow, Deputy Warden, has started a vocational program at his facility and the inmates are restoring a '70 Boss 302. See his original post HERE.

I've posted more info on the project HERE.

And more pics can be seen HERE.

Personally, I think this is a great project . . . and, I can't wait to see the Boss when it's through!

Rick

Wasn't Sylvester Stallone in a prison movie where they did restore a Mustang? I don't know the title, but I remember Sly's friend in the movie asking to start the car up. Then the guy got crazy and shifted it into drive and motored that beast into the rec. yard doing donuts in the mud!!

"c'mon, just let me start it, c'mon man"

I am certainly for the labor side being performed by the inmates - they can learn a trade that will be valuable to them in the future and will develop teamwork as is noted in the article. The article also mentions that the car will eventually be sold and the money put back into the program, so just one thing makes me curious. Where does the funds come from originally to find the often missing and valuable "Boss" parts? The inmates can learn/perform the welding, bodywork, painting, drive train rebuilding, interior restoration, etc. But; who is actually going to the swap meets for them and buying the expensive parts that cannot be fabricated? Still, it seems like a worthwhile project and I hope the inmates benefit from the experiences they will be encountering.

In response to skips69's question: "Who is actually going to the swap meets for them and buying the expensive parts that cannot be fabricated?" Emery Pratt, from Central Maine Musrstangs, has been our source for parts that we can not purchase or fabricate. Al Barlow (Deputy Warden)

I see an absolutely beautiful thing going on here. I wish these guys the best of luck in their project.

Mr. Barlow, what, if I may ask, will become of the finished product?

Alan,
As indicated in my info on the project, we will be selling the Boss 302 at no reserve at the auction in August at the Owls Head Transportation Museum here in Maine. The profits will go back into the vocational account so that we may find another classic to save.

Welcome Al! What a great program. I imagine all those guys have stories of Mustangs they knew on the outside. I wonder if any of them made their getaway in a Mustang? Keep up the great work and keep us posted on the progress!
