On 68-73 disc brakes, the calipers are held to the spindles by two fat bolts with multiple holes in their heads. Are the holes for cooling? Thanks! Simon

I noticed this also and didnt know why! Some of the cars Ive had, the PO ran wire through the holes and around the spindles. I think they did this to prevent the bolts from backing out. I have never done this myself and havent had any problems. I did use a thread lock sealer though!

The holes were put there to keep the bolts from siezing up.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Actually the holes are there for tie wire to prevent the bolts from vibrating out. John wvcat------------------ Thanks John (wvcat) http://www.geocities.com/wvxr7cougar/wvcat_01.html?989286238390 70 XR7 Restomod...wvcat 66 coupe project...she needs a name!!!

You would think that, but it's not the case. FoMoCo never saftey wired their caliper bolts or any other bolts in passenger cars.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Hey Alex, how does the holes keep the bolts from seizing up? I also thought they were for safety wire.My 68 had wire thru them that looked very old and untouched It wrapped around the spindle. So I replaced the wire when I rebuilt everything. Just trying to learn something new. Bob

My 70 also had wire in them when I got it. I can't understand how they could keep the bolts from siezing up. John wvcat------------------ Thanks John (wvcat) http://www.geocities.com/wvxr7cougar/wvcat_01.html?989286238390 70 XR7 Restomod...wvcat 66 coupe project...she needs a name!!!

MM also had holes in it's original disc brake caliper bolts. No saftey wires though. IN the early 70's I asked a FoMoCo tech why the holes and no saftey wires. He told me that the holes were there so the bolts could breathe. I looked at him and said, yeah...OK.Sure... A few years later I left GSD and went to work at a FoMoCo dealer and after pulling several hundred front wheels off, have yet to see any saftey wired caliper bolts. I eventually took what the old time FoMoCo tech told me a the truth. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator
