I have a 1968 coupe which has acquired late 1969 deluxe seats (six panel, high back with a head rest) sometime over the last 30 years and I wish to change these for the correct standard '68 bucket type.
The buckets I need have the seat seams running top-to-bottom and front to back, rather than side to side as on earlier cars. Second hand seats for '68 cars are extremely difficult to find here in the UK, and I'm told that '68 seats are thicker than earlier ones. Does anyone know if it is possible to recover seats from a pre-68 car with '68 covers (and possibly seat foam)? Are '68 seats based on the same frames as earlier cars, or is the only solution to track down some genuine '68 items? Many thanks.

Always cool to have another Brit on board
We've got several resident '68 experts (I'm not one of them ), so I'll let those who know respond to your topic

Mike welcome to M&M and I hope you find the site informative and fun.

My 1st question would be what is the build date of your 68.

I'm not much of an expert on seats as I usually have my Butt in them rather than my eyes on the them..LOL...

We have some really good fellows up her who are sharp as tacks.

Also you may want to check out Kevin Marti for more info on your 69 Mustang as he has all the Ford info for this model year.

www.martiauto.com

I think that correct if not one of the gang will correct me.

Again welcome to M&M

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.
My VIN and data plate information are:

8F01C204800 and 65A/I/2G/11F/B1/2/W

so I think that makes the build date 11 June 1968.

Cheers

Welcome!!!

Do your seats have the movable headrest like the 69s or is it moor like the fixed kind like the 69 Mach and 70 seats? The standard seats for 68-69 have basically the same frames so you could just delete the moveable headrests and get some new 68-style foam and upholstery. I think the 69 deluxe is the same frame also but I haven?t taken any apart.

Hi Ed,

The headrests are moveable. If you have an NPD Catalogue to hand, my seats are similar to those on page 4 at the bottom left, labelled as 1969 Dlx Comfortweave. They are like some strange hybrid between the 60's buckets and the highbacks of the 70's. Maybe I'll get adventurous and take the cover off one and see what's under there!

The 69 separate headrest seat is actually the standard seat for 69. I have them in my 68 cv. They are identical to the 68 except for the headrest. If I keep these seats in my car I'll want the headrests, for sure. You probably could eliminate the headrest and go with 68 upholstery. Look in the catalogs to see EXACTLY what you have.

Mike;
Some of the later 68's had the low style headrests, like was standard for 69. We've see a few of these and have had to order the 68 upholstery w/ the 69 headrest cover. Most suppliers are also familiar with these orders. We also sold a number of the 69 seats for 68's, because of the added safety factor. Since the headredt cover is solid vinyl, it doesn't matter which seat cover set you get, just get the cover in the same color. There's no design on either 68 or 69. If you pull the seats, there should be a metal tag on the springs and it should have a 68 engineering code, This would mean they are the original seats, or if it has a 69 code, someone swapped them. Recover with the 68 design, and noone will know they aren't original.
Also, check our web site for the 2004 event! www.ponydrive.us

Mine is an early 68 car, with a march build date and a 289. Dont know if the seats are original but the headrests look like the 69 kind.

Well, it's gotta be said, since this has come up in a few recent threads Phil, until someone tells me otherwise, I'm gonna say your headrests are from a '69. The factory '68 headrests have two pillar posts, not one.

One day I will get around to getting a report done on the car, but I wouldnt be surprised to find the seats are non orignal. A lot of the car has been modified.

The 2 support rod fact 68 headrest is larger than the one support rod headrest of 69. The 69 headrest has piping around edges and the 68 doesn't. I don't think the 69 cover will fit on the 68 fact headrest.

The metal tag attached to the seat spring will tell you what year the seat is if it?s still there. If you pull the seat and turn it over there is usually a thin sheet metal tag attached to the metal wire spring supporting the cushion.
