Right now I have a 289 4bbl with headers, 2" or 2.25" pipes, h-pipe, dual flowmasters. How much louder will my car be with two cutouts? Will it sound good? this may seem like a bad question, but the only cars I've heard with cutouts are highly modified, I know mine wont sound that good, but how good? Also, I plan on getting the cutouts that can be opened with a cable. Do any of you have suggestions or comments on this type? Thanks

I just realized there's a similar post on the racing forum...and they say these leak. Is there a way to seal them?

I have the cutouts that use a cap held on with wingnuts. They don't leak, and I really can't tell a difference in sound between open headers and open cutouts. There may be one, but it's so miniscule that it's undetectable to my ears at that kind of volume anyway.

streetstang67, I too have a 289 w/ 4bbl. I am running stock exhaust manifolds with 2 chamber flowmasters. Before I had the exhaust intalled, I was driving around town with about 4' of exhaust pipe coming of the manifolds. It was reeeeaaaalllllly loud! It sounded a little better than the "ratty exhaust leak" described above but not much. I thought it was cool for a couple of weeks but then I caught myself walking around saying "Huh?" to everyone I was talking to. You could hear that little 289 coming from a few miles away! I liked the sound enough that am am contemplating cutouts myself.

A stock engine with a loud exhaust is like a 98 pound kid with 'KILLER' tatoos. My neighbor's kid had a Nova type thing with a loud exhaust and it was hilarious watching it try to accelerate to 35 while sounding like a NASCAR race. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

I'm sure that would solve the problem, but seriosly, is there some kind of seal or epoxy or something that could fix it? I really wanted to be able to open the exhaust on command at any given stop light, and the electric cutouts are way too expensive. Any other suggestion? Thanks

No! The electric ones are the only ones that seal fairly well. The other option is to do it the way I do. Buy some of the Flow Tech weld in cut outs that can be un-capped at will. There are 3 (three) wing nuts that hold caps and gaskets in place for a leak proof seal. Buy the cut outs and take the car to a muffler shop and have them welded in. If you can't occasionally get down on your knees or lay on the ground to open them up then why bother? ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." It says they can "bolt up" to my headers. How would that work?

Those cutouts are also available in 3", which is the same size as most street header collectors. You'll also notice that they come with metal collector rings that can be welded to their ends. This allows them to be bolted to the end of the header's collector. The exhaust can then be bolted or welded to the cutout. But with headers (unless there's something in the way) it's possible to simply unbolt the exhaust from the collector and move it over... and fasten it to the side of the collector with one bolt. (That's what I used to do at the track before going with a free flowing 3" system) Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

The 2.5 inch ones don't come with collector rings. It's a Summit missprint. I stock them.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." What if I just unbolted my reducers from my headers and pushed the rest of the pipes up out of the way? That would be temporary of course, but would it work? I've heard that running open exhuast can "burn up" your heads...Can in hurt the engine in any way? Thanks again

It sounds to me like he just wants to be able to play with his exhaust on the street, at a stop sign, to try to get some 'wow' factor. Like the guys who want to have an electric clutch on the front of their 6-71 blower so they can switch it on like they saw in the movie Mad Maxx. I think this set-up would get more snickers and grins than it would awe and respect.

Are they one of those neat lil things that you buy.. then end up never using? I've always liked the sound of a car with open headers. But have heard few with open headers that weren't beyond a mild build.
