Why is it not possible to get a power steering box that has internal power assist? Like on GM cars and Jeeps and Toyotas...or dang near everything but early Fords? I was thinking that you could retro fit another steering box in the same location as the original. Either one that has the same mounting locations. Or using a 1/4 thick piece of plate, Countersink some bolt heads like they do on tranny adapters and mount a GM or Jeep or Ford truck PS unit in the same place? Then it would be the about the same weight. You could select your turn ratio and assist level. Unlike the power racks currently available you wouldn't have to remove the crossbrace under the engine. And best of all it would be substantialy cheaper then any of the currently available options. So why hasn't anyone done this or marketed one?

We put a 65-72 full size Ford box in a early Mustang with a 351C once.
It's do-able. Lot of welding involved.
Turned out well.

It '71 Mustang switched to the much superior Saginaw box. The early P/S system is a disaster. Did you know they also used that mess in the vette up to '67?

Actualy no I didn't know that steve...I'm an ex-Chevy guy...but hated then and still hate Corvettes...FUGLY cars.
Well, except maybe the small body 50's up till 64 corvettes those are alright looking.

I think it would't be too hard to make an adapter plate out of 3/8 plate and bevel the holes so that the bolt heads are flush like I said above, (like transmission adapters.) A steering box works just as good as rack and pinion as long as the mount is solid. Just seems like a better alternative to the rack and pinion jazz that TCP markets...for WAY too much!

Maybe I could give Flaming River a call. They make brand new manual boxes...they are big enough they could make the tooling and market a power one. I think they would sell a grip of 'em if the made it.

Course, I'm sticking with manual steering, at least till I talk them in to making it.

I've thought of that. Then isn't a heck of a lot of room there, but I'm sure you could find something that fit.

I like the looks of the vettes, except for the ones before '63.
