On the way to work today the 69 died. Something drained the battery. I took the old old in and bought a new one(needed one for my 56 F-100 anyways). Put it in and if fired right up. I noticed that the alt gauge show a small discharge. The old battery was charged and holds it fine. The alt. is about 3 months old. A few things are going though my head as to what is wrong. I'm wondering if I got the wrong alt at AutoZone(rm302boss thought the fan blades looked backwards) and got a reverse alt. or something is shorting. Anyone have an idea? I'm going to take it to AutoZone at lunch to have them plug it up. The bad part is, its rain like hell today and its cool to boot. The Stang would have to pick today to have problems.

Bad diode(s) in alternator can cause battery drain. Usually they will burn up and go open but they can simply have high leakage current and simply drain battery. If only one diode is bad, the result can be what you have experienced. Note the alternator can still appear to work under these conditions but will not pass a full load test. The stator will have a voltage on it from unbalanced current in the output. Autozone's tester should diagnose these faults.

Have the next one bench tested before you leave the store.
If it's good, then look at your alternator harness for the fuseable link. You may have toasted it.

Well, I didn't make it to AutoZone at lunch. The rain was coming down to hard for me to pull parts in a parking lot. Yup, I wussed out. Thanks guys. I will keep this stuff in mind when I do get it checked.

Voltage regulator? did you replace it with the alt? That would be my first guess.
New alt, new batt yep, i would go to the voltage regulator.

I had a similar problem with my '66- it woldn't charge. I replaced the alternator and regulator, but no help. It turned out that the ground wire from the block to chassis was corroded. Wire brushed it and the grounding points, and it charged perfectly. Make sure all your connections are to bare metal, and wire brush any that look suspect.
