My car is completly stripped, I am putting it back together very slowly. when I dont have money (most of the time) for my mustang I like to take the parts and clean them for future re-assemble. anyway as I was cleaning the rear marker lights I noticed that the light frames were stamped with LH and RH the lenses are inserted the the plastic tab is melted to keep them form falling out. Now this is what got me both lens were upside down the ford logo was upside down. I thought this was pretty odd.

Does anyone else have any odd factory assembly stories. I'd like to hear them, just for the heck of it

Rick

I work at the GM factory in Oshawa and sometimes I think of the arguements these cars might cause in the future if someone was going to restore one.For example I install the trunk lock mechanism. We used to put two new(silver cad plated)nuts on each latch assembly. Then they decided that it would be cheaper to use one new nut and one old nut(there is a device with a chain on it that holds the trunklid half closed when it is getting dipped and painted)so this nut is the same colour as the body. Then if I happen to drop the old coloured nut I just put on two new nuts so I can just see the concours judges years from now argueing over whether the car came with two cad plated bolts or one painted and one cad.I'm sure this goes on all over the car and has dating back to the mustangs as well.Something that seems strange when your restoring it probably had a good reason for it when it was being built.

Was it built around Christmas or New Years?

LOL!

Mustangboy, you could be called to court someday to testify as an expert witness on which car should have won

Anyone know anyone who worked in a Mustang assembly plant when their ride rolled off the line?

i believe the car was made in february, i'll check the vin again.

I bet in reality many cars have these little oddities. part of the human touch. I thought it was pretty cool- for the reasons that mustangboy mentioned.

i can image the arbitration at show time!!

This doesn't really fit here, but it's worth a little exposure. I now have conclusive evidence that 1966 Mustang radios were still being installed in 1968 cars, despite newly designed radios for Mustangs in 1967 AND 1968.
In fact, one thing I have personally not seen yet is a 68 with an original so-called 68 radio in it. Anyone have one? That's with the black knobs. Maybe your '72 came with one!

Interesting about the radio, I think my AM radio in the 1968 Mustang is original and it has chrome knobs and push buttons. I have a spare AM radio out of a 1966 and it has chrome knobs and black plastic push buttons. Now am wondering what is original.

I noticed the left rear marker on my Mach has the Ford oval upside down. I've been wondering about that.

I remember once trying to find a rattle in a new Buick Century 4 door and I narrowed it down to something loose in the right rear door. So I took the interior panel off and found a Pepsi bottle with a note inside that read "Well, ****er, it took you long enough to find it, huh?" {It didn't}

I have one! I?ll have to see what the date on the sticker is and when the car was built when I get home.

I thought the sticker had a date on it but it just has some test codes. It has 8TPZ 217903 stamped on it and it has black buttons with the chrome knobs. Car was built on April 26th at the Metuchen plant.

My late-year '65 has an in-dash 8-track installed by the dealer, although I think they were technically a '66 option. Could some of the odd build combinations have actually been dealers getting rid of their inventory rather than factory changes?

You mean my car isn't the only one with an upside lens? My '70's rear driver side marker light is also installed upside down. The passenger side is right, but the driver is upside down. I was going to correct it, but gave up since I would have to remove some of the evaporative emissions components to get to the light.
