ok guys. i am not sure what this hole on my block is for. when i bought the engine, it needed to be rebuilt. so i brought it to the shop and there was this "broken valve thing" sticking out of a hole that the machinist took out for me. the hole is between the dipstick and thermostat housing. it seemed like the "broken valve thing" was pressed in there and thats why i couldnt take it out myself. i am going to be putting the engine back in the car very soon and i would like to know what i do with this hole. do i plug it or is it needed for something? it is about 5/8" in diameter. any suggestions to what this is for would be great. thanks.

Are you talking about the temperature sending unit?------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

This should help: The dip stick goes under that piece of duct tape, the pressed-in tube goes to your heater hose, the threaded hole in the front of the block is for the water temperature sending unit. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com [This message has been edited by SteveLaRiviere (edited 02-17-2003).]

thanks steve! thats helps a lot! i am talking about the pressed-in tube. so it goes to my heater hose? what does it exactly do? is it a vent? and do i have to bring the block someplace to get the tube pressed-in or can i do it myself? also should it be plugged/hooked up to the heater hose or can i leave it the way it is (open like the one in the picture) for now when i start my engine for the first time?

The best (IMO) way around the pressed-in tube, is to thread the hole for the screw-in heater hose nipple that you can get from NPD. ------------------ "My doctor says I have a malformed public duty gland and a natural deficiency in moral fiber; and that I am, therefore, excused from saving universes." ... You can also get a new press in nipple from NAPA. You can gently tap it in using a block of wood between the hammer and the nipple. Now getting out the old one (if it is broken off in there) can be a real pain...... Like Dwayne said, the very best solution would be to tap it for a screw in fitting, but the press in works fine.

That's the supply hose to your heater core. If you leave it open you'll have a hell of a water leak. I used to get my new ones at the Ford dealership, but I imagine they can only be had at NAPA now? {I ought to buy myself a dozen. ) They are easy to replace. I put sealer on the tube, take a deep 1/2" socket {I think I use a 11/16"?} and tap it in with a wooden mallet. {the socket prevents the tube from deforming as you drive it in} ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com

Also, I wrap the top part of the tube with duct tape before I put the socket on and drive it in to prevent marring.------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 - '72 Mustang Sprint - '94 F-150 Please remember our sponsors, Mustangs Plus, NPD, Osborn Reproductions, MyFordPerformance.com, and FordRamAir.com
