I hate how the shift pattern works on my 65' C4 "Green Dot". While I have the engine/tranny out of my car, is there anything that can be done within reason to make the thing shift like a normal C4 with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd shifter pattern?

Start in low, shift to the green dot to go to 2nd, shift back to low to hold it in 2nd, then shift back to the green dot to go to 3rd. If you shift from low to the smaller dot (where the car starts in 2nd gear for slick conditons) it will INSTANTLY shift to 2nd gear... but it's a LOT easier to hit neutral that way. (experience talking here) My car used to have one of those before I converted it to a 4-speed. I've had the car since age 15, and am 34 now. The 4-speed bug hit pretty hard, and when in high school, a complete transformation kit from the junkyard (out of a fairlane) only cost $125, and that included the transmission! It was a definite learning experience for a mere kid with minimal tools and experience! Pilot bushing? What's that? You mean those transmissions come with different tailshaft housings? Get the hacksaw! Damn... that clutch spring sure is strong! I believe you can just swap the valve body with a "normal" shift patern C4 and you'll be good to go.

If the car is shifted into low above 30mph or so, it will NOT shift down into 1st gear. It will shift down to 2nd instead. If you are wanting to be able to downshift into 2nd, just yank the shifter down into low. If the car is going too fast for 1st gear, it will go into 2nd instead. You can't 'blow it up' by yanking the shifter into 2nd gear unless you're travelling 100+ mph. A 67-70 C-4 "select shift" valve body can be installed with a minimum of fuss. That will give you the desired P-R-N-D-2-1 pattern.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,&'03 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
