While I have been trying to start my car I took a valve cover of the drivers side of the engine to make sure I was on the compression TDC of #1 (I know #1 is passenger side but the heater hose makes that side more difficult so I opened the driver side instead and worked it out)

anyway under the cover it had 289 cast into the heads as well as 66 and 6E16

does this mean I have 66 heads on my 68? someone has rebuilt the engine before so its easy to see why they would do this. I better check the passenger side and make sure it matches!!!

Phil

You didn't need to take a valve cover off, just a spark plug.

The 6E16 is a casting date of May 16, '66 for the heads.

cylinder 5 (front cyl on drivers side)follows cylinder 1 by 90 degrees, so if the valves are shut on cylinder 5, 90 degrees after TDC on the balancer then I have compression. Then I just back it up to line up with my marks.

Having said all this I had to do it twice to get it right, but thats because I was being thick headed myself.

So what are the differences between 66 heads and 68 heads?

I think they may have smaller chambers (higher compression) and perhaps better flow (no thermactor humps?)

Is this a common swap? When I did the intake manifold swap (2 barrel to 4 barrel) it didnt look much like the heads were ported. Perhaps I have a mongrel engine that has been assembled out of different parts.
