OK, things are going from bad to worse.

I tried putting a duraspark system on the car yesterday, but it wouldnt fire up. It had spark etc...

Well I decided to switch back to a points distibutor just to make it run again. although the points have not run well in the past they have always at least fired up ok.

Now it wont run. I have checked the timing by ensuring TDC compression stroke lines up rotor with #1 plug lead, and the strobe gives me 10 degrees of static timing. The spark is good, theres fuel going through (the garage stinks of it). What am I missing? The starter cranks it over as usual.

Have i got it too full of fuel? If I have what do I do to clear it out? Remove all the plugs and let it breath for an hour or two? It used to start very easily and nothing is different now.

Arrgh Im getting sick of this, its supposed to be fun...

Have you verified you had true TDC by taking a spark plug out, putting your thumb over the hole and bumping it over until you get compression, then lining up the timing marks?

Make sure its stabbed correctly, find TDC on cylinder 1 and see where your cap is pointed. Where in points in 1 on your cap. We had this issue as well. We missed by a tooth or so and had to rotate the wires all one spot to the right.

Well, I thought I had,
I did the thumb trick, then I looked at the rockers under the valve cover.

However I seem to have convinced myself that I had compression on #1 but it turns out I had it wrong. Since my first post I righted my error and although the car didnt start it stuttered like maybe it wanted to. So im giving it a rest and will go back to it later when the battery is charged more fully and hopefully the raw gas has evaporated some.

A new set of points did the trick.
only it took a lot of pumping the pedal and then a lot of running to burn off the raw gas. I had the garage door wide open and I still nearly died of the fumes.
Problem solved,
thanks yet again to you guys making sure I had the right TDC.

I dont know,
I only ran the car for a few minutes. I cant drive it around for a few days on account of a fresh couple of inches of snow. It ran smoothly in Park, but Usually it doesnt show until you put in Drive, or try to accelerate. In Drive if the points are bad it usually sounds like it has a cam in it, but I havnt tried it on this new set.

I will let you know...

What do you think about my plug wires having 11,000 Ohms of resistance for the shortest wires? I tried my older wires which have 19,000 ohms and it was worse (could have seen that coming!). The newer (11,000 Ohm)wires I'm using are Beldon 7mm.

Sounds like a bit on the high side. I think acceptable stock is ~1000-4000 Ohms per foot. Performance wires are often ~250 Ohms per foot.
