Someone was asking what the 68 headrest option looked like or how it differed from the 69 seats. This has a pretty good shot at the 68 seats.

Yup, they're the ones I have. The '69s only have a single metal stanchion, don't they?
I still remember an old, old thread here on M&M where some folk derided '68 headrests, said they were just cheapo add-ons, etc., and that headrests proper started in '69. I kept my mouth closed at the time 'cos I thought mine must come from a '69. But now I'm wiser, I ask, "What is wrong with '68 headrests?" And I answer, "Nothing, nothing at all"

I remember someone asking about them but couldn?t find the post. I put the 69s in my coupe also. The 68 not only has the two posts but the piping (I think that?s what its called) is around the back where the 69 has it on the sides.

I don't think I've seen those before. It sure improves the looks of those seats.

Me too.

I need to reupholster mine, do you know if 68 upholstery will fit the 69 seat if I buy a 69 headrest cover? I am trying to add up the cost of an interior color change since I'm buying almost everything new anyhow, and would like to go to parchment. I think it should work, and they don't list parchment in 69 upholstery.

They were a factory option and a dealer option so I don?t know if they were different but these definitely look factory to me.

I never compared the seat frames but from the outside they look identical. I forget where I got the upholstery from but I told them I needed the 68 with the headrest option and they hooked me up! The headrest upholstery I got was definitely a match for the 69 style and not what is pictured in the link above.

You can put 69 covers on a 68 (front)
You can special order a set of parchment 68 covers and pay extra for the headrest covers. Your parts dealer can do that for you. It is a cash up front deal. Both Distinctive and TMI offer this service through their dealers.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm definitely moving into the highland green with parchment interior mindset. Depending on cost maybe in parchment deluzxe.

I have headrests in my 68 and they have the 69 style single support post (not pictured). My car was an early 68 (289 engine) not a 68 and 1/2 but who knows who put the headrests in. I believe the headrests form part of a dealer installed "saftey group"

The car also has 3 point seat belts, remote drivers mirror, passenger side mirror, power brakes, turn signal repeaters in the hood...

all things considered the 68 was a saftey concious car with collapsable steering column, padded steering wheel and console, not to mention the flip up door handles. Shame they hadnt figured out that the gas tank was dangerous!

Safety conscious, yes, but not that much I can say with 99.9% certainty that your passenger side mirror was not factory.
As for the headrest, are you sure you have '68 seats? I'm not suggesting you take them out, but I believe there's a C8Z tag on the seat rails. If they are '68 headrests, then this whole can of worms has spilled into new ground!

Yes, those were the ones that I was talking about way back on the original thread. They were round cylinder shapped and slid over the back rest.

I suppose the seats could be 69 if someone really wanted to swap them they could have. The fact that the rest of the car is optioned in a similar way tells me that the stuff is dealer installed. I will take pictures.

Just my 5 cents in here, as I have the original factory 68 headrests (as confirmed by the Marti report).

As I learned from Allan Cross (www.fomoco.com) the 68 factory headrest cover seams are different from those of the 69. 68 headrest cover material is not available, so the 69 headreast cover would probably be the only way to go unless you find some NOS stuff.
