Topic: U-Joint Inner Snap Rings

On my '65 Mustang, I have pulled the driveshaft and want to replace the U-Joints. Two bearings came free from the yoke with no problem. The other two (attached to the driveshaft) refuse to budge. I have removed the outer snap rings and tried pressing, hammering and generally making a fool of myself, but they are still firmly in place. One illustration of this U-Joint assembly shows a pair of inner snap rings on two of the bearings, but I can't see any on my yoke. I have pictures of this problem if someone wants me to email them. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING STUPID THAT I'M DOING HERE!!!! [email protected]

Welcome to M & M Rick. is it cleaned up good enough? Some of those inner snap rings are hard to see. Yeah, I have it on the bench and cleaned up really well. The stubborn bearings had snap rings on the outside just like the ones that came off easily. I don't really know if they have inner rings as well, but if they do I don't see any possible way to get to them. If they don't have inner rings, I can't understand why they won't come off even after MAJOR persuasion. Is this something where you need a machine shop with a hydraulic press to punch them out? I've tried a C-Clamp with a block which has a hole to let the opposite bearing out, a hammer with a brass drift, and a bigger hammer with a brass drift. The bearing will shift just enough to cause the spider to bind a little, but thats all.

If I was you, I'd locate a steel coffee can and pour in about 6" of fuel oil (deisel fuel). Then I'd heat up the yoke loops with a propane torch (hot, but not too hot to take any temper out). Then take both the can and the shaft outside and submerge the hot yoke end in the oil. Yeah, it'll steam/smoke some but it shouldn't blaze..... leave it soak in the oil overnight. The next day, take the yoke out, wipe it off, then try your C-clamp again; it may need alittle help with the ballpeen, but you don't want to beat the loops outta shape. Good luck! Ryan

I got the silly thing off! I cut thru the spider and got the bearings out. The guy that put this together a few years ago apparently used some sort of thread-locker to glue the bearings into place (as well as the snap-rings)?! What you don't know CAN hurt you (or the guy who follows you)! Anyway, the yokes are OK, I have everything cleaned up and will be putting in new bearings, etc. this afternoon...WITHOUT thread-lock compound!Thanks especially to Ryan for his "off-line" help!
