hi everyone.how will i be able to identify if my grande has a C4 or a C6? i think ill be needing a rebuild kit but i dunno which one to order.

i've been having problems with the tranmission lately. i drove the grande home (~50kms/30mi) from the sellers place with no problems with the drive. as i was parking i realized there was almost no power backing up. a week or two past when i got to add ATF now the reverse is ok but i dont get any forward movement with drive. i've talked to a couple of mechanics here and they say i'm going to have to either rebuild the transmission(hence the need for a rebuild kit) or swap it with a good one.

All ideas and comments welcome.

What engine do you have? Is it original? If your car still has the tag on the left door pillar it should have a trans. code on it.

it originally had an I6 250ci 1V engine. but it currently has a V8 302ci 2V.nope,no door tag,it was probably taken out when one of the previous owners had it repainted.

If it's the original transmission it should be a C4. I believe that's the one that usually came with sixes. Someone else may know more, though.
Welcome to M&M, by the way.

Nice Grande. Rarely see one around here. The mach looks like a nice project. Kinda reminds me of my '73 when I found it, without the body damage. Now that it's almost done I think my next project will be a 71-73 coupe.

Heh kalevala, are you related to Erik? His family's from Cavite.
In case you don't already know it, there are a lot of folks in your neck of the woods capable of "rebuilding" a tranny so it never works again. If it's a rebuild you need, I can recommend a first-rate specialist in old Ford trannies in Malate, Manila. I don't have his card with me now, but I'm flying back next Monday. He's not cheap -- say, P10,000 plus parts plus any machining work that's needed -- but he's the best I know of.

hey simon, nope i dont know erik. thanks for the tip.send me the address of the shop when youre back. maybe i should start saving up for it. also, do know of any good parts suppliers here? aside from the usual Angeles and La Union.Do you know of any clubs around here?

I know quite a few good parts places. When I get back, I'll post you some phone numbers. And like you suggest, be very wary of the Angeles crowd unless you know exactly what you're looking for, and don't mind buying parts from stolen cars

If you tell me how many bolts are in your trans. pan , and the general shape of the pan, then I can tell you what trans it is. Is the pan square, or is it square with a notch in one corner?

You should have a C4. It has a seperate bellhousing and aluminum case and the door tag would say W under 'trans.'

I doubt you have an FMX, it's a heavier duty trans than the sixes needed. You can ID those by the fact that they have a cast iron case. It also has a seperate bellhousing like the C4 does. The door tag code is X.

While it's possible someone bolted in a C6, I doubt it. They are easy to spot because they have a one piece bellhousing/case assembly.

Be careful of that supposed Mach 1. Most Mach1's had the ram air hood. They all had the color keyed bumper and hood and fender edge trim. Looks like it has a smooth black panel on the back and this should be homney comb the same as the grille. Most teling is that it has a standard valance with out the two cutouts for the dual exhaust tips. All Mach 1's had duals to my knowledge. Looks to me like a standard sportsroof that someone put a Mach grille in.

A Mach will have an 05 in the third and fourth position of the VIN, except for '69s. Regular sportsroof has an 02.

All 71-73 Mach 1's did NOT come with the NASA hood or the dual exhaust and cut-outs in the rear valance.
The standard engine in 71-73 Mach's was a 302 2-V, single exhaust(No cutouts), and the flat hood was standard. The NASA hood was a no cost option for 302-equipped Machs.
Any Mach that came with a 351 or larger engine came with the NASA hood as standard.
Any Mach 1 that came from the factory with a 4 barrell engine came with the dual exhaust and chrome tips with the valance cut-outs. 2-Barrells all had the regular valance and single exhaust.
Of course, none of these had functional ram-air unless ordered seperatly, or as part of the engine package.(Ex: 'J'-code 429 or the 'R'-code BOSS 351).
The ram-air was not availible on the 302 or the six-cylinder.
