You are probably thinkg of the "Sand blasting" type of paint removal that uses baking soda instead of sand as the blasting agent.

I think your talking about soda blasting. They use baking soda because it is finer than sand, doesn't hurt metal, and disolves with water.

I would not even consider soda blasting on a car, it leaves a residue that is hard to get rid of. We just soda blasted a Gas Turbine rotor and other parts at work last week and it is still bleeding white deposits out of every crack and crevice. Some areas required using a wire brush to remove the deposits. Also the reside causes rust on any bare metal area it forms on. It is a belief that you jest rinse it off with water, but it is not that easy.
